American tennis star Ben Shelton was engaged in a war of words with tournament officials at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, when his second round match against Rinky Hijikata was suspended.

The World No.10 had defeated Australian Alex Bolt in the opening round, and took on Bolt's countryman in a hard hitting encounter two days later. Shelton raced to a two sets to love lead, and appeared to be on his way to the third round when controversy struck.

Match suspended due to darkness

Being one of the last matches of the day, Shelton and Hijikata squared off with hopes of finishing before nighttime. The American won the first two sets, and was serving for the match at 5-4 when the umpire made the decision to end proceedings for the day due to the conditions being too dark.

Unhappy with this decision, Shelton walked up to the official and voiced his concerns. This led to a lengthy conversation between the duo, with Shelton wanting to serve out the match whereas the official was adamant on stopping play.

Eventually, the match would be suspended and both players were forced to return the following day. Shelton would serve out the match, recording a 6-2 7-5 6-4 victory.

During his post-match press conference, the Atlanta native was asked to divulge what transpired between himself and the umpire. Shelton responded by stating the officials told him that Hawk-Eye would stop working in five minutes, making it difficult to make electronic line calls should the need arise.

"I was telling him I only need 60 seconds," said the American.

Nonetheless, Shelton advanced to the third round, where he faces Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.
