'I was better looking than that': Andy Murray hoping for improved statue at Wimbledon

Britain’s Andy Murray has expressed optimism that his new statute at Wimbledon will be nothing like the one he had made for him in 2011. Recently, the chair of the All England Club, Debbie Jevans, while talking in the Ainslie + Ainslie Performance People podcast, published on Tuesday, June 24, announced that they are looking to install a statue of Murray for his services to British tennis.

"We are looking to have a statue of Andy Murray here (at Wimbledon) and we're working closely with him and his team," said Jevans. "The ambition is that we would unveil that at the 150th anniversary of our first championship, which was 1877. He's got to rightly be very involved in that, and he and his team will be."

Murray has spoken to The Guardian, where he expressed optimism that his Wimbledon performance will be much better than the one he unveiled at the Shanghai Masters back in 2011. “I thought I was better looking than that,” he said. “When we played in Shanghai, they did these terracotta, warrior-type things, and they weren’t great. But based on how Wimbledon goes about things, and their attention to detail, I would expect that it would be very good. So I trust that they’ll do a good job.”

Murray, in another interview with the BBC, stated that he is proud of what he has achieved, both while playing and now that he has been honoured by the authorities. “I’m very proud,” he said. “There’s not many statues around the grounds and I always remember seeing the Fred Perry statue when I’ve walked around the grounds and gone to practice there over the years.

Murray had a fabulous record while playing at Wimbledon. He won the competition twice. His first Wimbledon title came in 2013 when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final in straight sets with a score of 6–4, 7–5, 6–4. Three years later, Murray lifted the Wimbledon title for the second time after beating Milos Raonic of Canada in the final with a score of 6–4, 7–6(7–3), 7–6(7–2).
