Andrey Rublev had a personal interview with the ATP Tour website, where he referred to his mental health problems and his outbursts during several of his matches. The Russian has shown all his explosive personality, with several tantrums throughout his career.
In Shanghai 2023, Rublev had a controversy with a Chinese photographer for firing his camera during a point, yelling at him and receiving a warning from the chair umpire. A few months later in Dubai 2024, he was disqualified for shouting at a line judge, where he allegedly swore in Russian, leading to his disqualification and loss of ATP points and prize money.
Another controversy occurred in his third-round match at Roland Garros 2024, where, while facing Matteo Arnaldi, he broke rackets and kicked his bench, in addition to repeatedly hitting his knee. Shortly after, he admitted to having lost control of his emotions.
"The feeling is like you’re dying. It’s like someone came to murder you,” commented Rublev regarding his constant episodes of losing control. “And of course what do you do? You are at the peak of your stress. You try to do everything to save your life.”
“After every match I was like a dead person. One week in the room, depressed, like the end of the world is happening. And then a couple of years ago, I realized it’s Bulls**t,” Rublev said to ATP Tour. “I arrived to the point that I was completely lost with myself. I had no escape, I didn’t understand what I’m doing. Who I am. What I am living for.”
The former world No. 5 has fallen in the rankings and has had a year away from the spotlight. He is No. 14 in the ATP ranking and only No. 18 in the Race. Combining Masters 1000 tournaments and Grand Slams in 2025, Rublev has just three wins and seven losses. He reached the fourth round of the French Open a few weeks ago after Arthur Fils withdrew before their third-round match. Nevertheless, he ended up falling to Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16.
