Nick Kyrgios stole the spotlight during TNT Sports' television broadcast, reacting live to the Wimbledon final between Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek. The Australian joined commentators Dan Evans and Coco Vandeweghe for the Pole's phenomenal triumph.
The final will go down in history for its lopsided score: 6-0, 6-0 in favor of Swiatek. It's only the second time in the Open Era that this result has occurred, the previous being 37 years ago at the French Open, where Steffi Graf similarly delivered a "double bagel" against Natasha Zvereva.
Anisimova's erratic start initially seemed like it might be a matter of final nerves, and that she would gradually adapt to the match's rhythm, but she couldn't find her game and watched as Swiatek increased her lead.
When the score was 5-0 in favor of Swiatek – who already had three breaks – Kyrgios offered his opinion on what he himself would do if he were in Anisimova's situation. “I mean, I know it sounds crazy, but in a moment like this, I would be just completely like, tank this set,” the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up said. “I would just throw the set away, give my opponent no rhythm and just get ready, like rope-a-dope, like in boxing and just get ready for the second set.”
“Like, what are her chances, realistically, of her winning this set right now?” the Aussie added. “Like four underarms,” he added with a smile.
Later, Kyrgios continued to joke – after Swiatek decisively claimed the first set 6-0, winning the last 10 points consecutively. “I mean, I’m calling an injury time out, next, yeah,” Kyrgios continued. “I’m doing anything. I might – injury time out, I don’t know, do anything. Take the shirt off, anything to just stop this momentum.”
“I’d tank the set. Four underarms. Just walk side to side.”
