'If he wins two or three matches, he becomes favorite,' Mats Wilander believes Novak Djokovic can win Roland Garros if he gets his rhythm back

Things are not working well for Novak Djokovic this year as he is finding it hard to get his rhythm back. At Roland Garros, he is not the main favorite, given that he has lost all five tournaments he has played previously without making it to the finals, including in the ATP 250 Geneva Open.

However, Mats Wilander, a three-time Roland Garros champion, believes if Djokovic plays a few matches and gets his rhythm back, he will be the man to beat on the clay court of Paris.

The first round and second round could be tricky for Novak because he hasn't played that much. Once he's through if he wins two or three matches, then, wow, he becomes the big, big favorite to me. Mats Wilander said on Eurosport

In the Geneva Open which Djokovic played before Roland Garros by receiving a wild card, he lost in the semifinals to 44th-ranked Tomas Machac 6-4, 0-6, 6-1. He is set to face Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round at Roland Garros scheduled on Monday (May 27th).

Novak Djokovic doesn’t consider himself a favorite for the Roland Garros title

Novak Djokovic admitted that he is going through a rough phase and doesn’t consider himself the favorite for a fourth Roland Garros crown.

(I’ve had) some (good) matches here and there, but it is what it is. You have to accept it. I don't consider myself a favorite there. I have a lot to work on. I’m going to take it match by match and see how far I can go. Novak Djokovic told reporters after defeat to Tomas Machac in the Geneva Open

The World No. 1 added that he’s not able to focus on tennis because of “other stuff happening” and is hoping to be fit and ready for the event in Paris. Notably, Djokovic took a medical time-out during the semifinals against Machac. He also got hit by a metal bottle while signing autographs following his match against Corentin Moutet in the Rome Open.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion will attempt to defend his Roland Garros crown and if he fails to advance to the final, he will lose his position in the ATP Rankings to Jannik Sinner. The 22-year-old will be defending just 45 points and Djokovic’s failure to defend 2000 points by reaching the final will make the Italian the first player from his country to reach the top of the points table.
