Iga Swiatek Claims Winning Majors on Every Surface is Not Her Goal After Reaching Wimbledon Final: 'It’s Not How I Work'

Iga Swiatek recently claimed she has not paid much heed to winning a Grand Slam title on every surface. Swiatek, however, will join a very small list of players with Major victories on every surface if she wraps up the Wimbledon final in her favor.

Against the Pole will be playing Amanda Anisimova, who, like Swiatek, has reached the Wimbledon final for the first time in her life. She went past World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in three sets to secure her sixth win in their ninth meeting. The Belarusian, for the third time this season, lost Grand Slam matches to an American player as before Anisimova, Madison Keys, and Coco Gauff defeated her in the Australian Open and the French Open finals, respectively.

But Swiatek and Anisimova have scheduled a match against each other for the very first time. Following her straight-set victory over Belinda Bencic, the five-time Grand Slam champion revealed at the press conference that she never had dreamed of winning Majors on every surface.

Not really, because I never thought it would be possible. As I said after my last match, I’m not the kind of person that sets these kinds of goals. I kind of live tournament by tournament. It’s not like I wake up and I’m like ‘Ok, I’m gonna win three Slams this year.’ It’s not how I work. I have more like, down-to-earth goals, practicing day by day. This is what has always been working. I never had goals like that I would say.

While Anisimova will be playing her first-ever Grand Slam final, Swiatek is bidding to win her sixth Major title. She first emerged triumphant at the 2020 French Open and two years later, the 24-year-old doubled the Roland Garros tally and also lifted the US Open. Swiatek then was successful in defending the French Open title in 2023 and 2024.

At Wimbledon, before this season, Swiatek had never progressed beyond the quarterfinals, reaching the stage in 2023; while last year, Yulia Putintseva ended her campaign in the third round. Swiatek is also aiming to win her first grass-court title here.

She will be playing her second grass-court final of her career. Before Wimbledon, the World No.4 lost to Jessica Pegula in the Bad Homburg Open final. It was also her first final since her victory at the French Open last year.

Iga Swiatek says facing Amanda Anisimova will be a challenge

Amanda Anisimova is chasing her second title of the season, following her Qatar Open win. Apart from lifting her second WTA 1000 title, the American ace has also played in the final of the Queen’s Club Championships but lost the title to Tatjana Maria.

The 23-year-old, too, has not yet lifted a grass-courts title. At Wimbledon before this season, Anisimova produced her best when she made it to the last eight in 2022.

She knows how to play on grass. With her style of play, the surface suits her, so it’s going to be a challenge. Anyone with mental toughness who returns to a higher level deserves a lot of respect. I’m sure Amanda is one of those players who keeps going in difficult situations. I’ve always wished her the best, we’ve known each other since junior days.

Iga Swiatek said at the press conference

If Swiatek wins the title, then she will remove Jessica Pegula to occupy the third spot on the rankings table. Anisimova has reached her career-best ranking of No.7 in the live rankings after reaching the final and a win will take her to the fifth spot.

Wimbledon will once again see a new champion. Since seven-time Wimbledon singles champion Serena Williams (last won in 2016), no woman has claimed the grass-court Major two times.
