After accumulating a record number of wins at the French Open, Iga Swiatek saw her magical run in Paris come to and end at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka. However, the Polish star's feats will remain etched in tennis history.
Swiatek was the three-time defending champion entering this year's Roland Garros tournament. The former World No.1 had experienced a subpar season by her lofty standards, but was hoping to bounce back on her favorite surface with the odds in her favor.
Swiatek breezed through the first three rounds in Paris, before dropping her first set to former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the round of 16. After defeating the Kazakh star in three sets, Swiatek would overcome Elena Svitolina in the quarterfinals, setting a blockbuster clash against rival Sabalenka.
The Polish star would narrowly lose the first set in a tiebreak, before winning the second set. However, Swiatek would surprisingly get bageled in the third set, with the big-hitting Belarusian scoring a 7-6(1) 4-6 6-0 win to reach her maiden French Open final and stop Swiatek's consecutive title runs at three.
At just 24 years of age, Swiatek still has several French Open finals in her future. The former World No.1 can hold her head high, having accomplished several feats during her incredible run in Paris over the years.
Prior to her loss to Sabalenka, Swiatek had won 26 straight matches at the French Open, which included three consecutive titles. This is the second longest Roland Garros winning streak of all time. Furthermore, the Polish star won the title in 2020, giving her four French Open titles. Already known as the best female clay court player of all time, it will come as no surprise when she finds herself back in the final at the Parisian Grand Slam event.
