Iga Swiatek's misery continues as Danielle Collins clinches crushing Rome Open win
IPA

The defending champion is out at the Rome Open as Iga Swiatek has been dumped out by Danielle Collins who certainly has no love lost for the former World No.1 but has only beaten her once until today.

Swiatek has suffered concerning defeats to Alexandra Eala in Miami, Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart and also Coco Gauff last week in Madrid and was nearly bageled again by the American.

She finally sealed it 6-1 in the first set but could've won it even more clinically in the second sealing it 7-5. Swiatek finally found her grit but only in the second set as back against the wall she saved her skin.

But given the position she was in, Collins was always going to get the opportunity to shine and she did so. The American was vocal about the fakeness of the current Roland Garros champion during their last meeting on clay at the Olympic Games last year.

Albeit it appeared to be pretty one sided with Swiatek not engaging in it but Collins also rolled her eyes while shaking her hand at the United Cup. For Collins it unlocks the draw not only for her but perhaps Elina Svitolina who she could face next.

Peyton Stearns also will be thinking she has a golden opportunity. The American who is friends with Collins could face her in the Quarter-Finals. She wiped out Madison Keys earlier today and now faces Marie Bouzkova or Naomi Osaka.

For Swiatek, she doesn't have a title in the last 12 months and will drop to World No.4 at best with Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff who have been circling for some time ready to pounce.

It has not been the best time off court losing his grandfather recently but Swiatek has not managed to unlock that aura which saw her ascend as Queen of Clay for the last few seasons and Collins took full advantage today.
