Zheng Qinwen eliminated Emma Raducanu with a 6-2, 6-4 victory, advancing to the semifinals of the Queen's Club Championships. The Paris 2024 gold medalist has reached the semifinal round of a grass-court tournament for the first time, delivering an impressive performance in one of the day's standout matches.
Currently, Zheng is moving towards her best historical position as World No. 4 in the live rankings – though the spot isn't yet secured. If Madison Keys wins the title, Zheng will remain at No. 5. Her next opponent will be the winner between Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova.
After winning her first-round match against Kessler, Zheng stated that she had big ambitions on grass-courts and was convinced she could bring her best level to this surface. She has demonstrated this so far, proving superior for much of the match against a tough opponent.
The start seemed even, with both players defending their service games – though not without issues. Zheng was the first to get break opportunities in the 4th game, where she squandered three chances while Raducanu stayed in the match. Raducanu showed problems with her second serve that ended up costing her dearly, as Zheng took the lead in the 6th game after missing 6 break points earlier in the match.
Zheng maintained first-serve percentages above 70%, winning over 70% of those points. Still, Raducanu managed to get her first break points of the match. It was of little use, however, as the World No. 5 showed her class to win a couple of easy points when she was in trouble. She finally closed the set on her serve 6-2 after 50 minutes of play.
In the second set, Raducanu started strong, taking two consecutive breaks that put her ahead 3-0 and seemingly in a good position to quickly send the match to a third set. However, Zheng reacted despite the crowd being completely in favor of her opponent, getting a break that brought her back into contention.
Zheng secured two breaks, turning a 1-3 deficit into a 4-4 tie. The final minutes of the match were remarkable for the World No. 5. From 3-4 down, she won 10 consecutive points and had three match points in her favor. Although Raducanu managed to push it to deuce, it wasn't enough, and Zheng ultimately secured the break that gave her the definitive 6-2, 6-4 victory in one hour and 50 minutes.
Her next opponent will be the winner of the all-American clash between Emma Navarro (No. 10) and Amanda Anisimova (No. 15), which will be played in the last slot of the evening at Queen's. The Chinese player leads the head-to-head against both potential rivals, both 2-0, although she has never faced them on grass-courts.
