'It’s super frustrating,' French lucky loser Corentin Moutet disappointed after failing to capitalize on early lead against Novak Djokovic in Italian Open

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic faced France’s Corentin Moutet in his first-round match at the ongoing Italian Open and defeated him 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 26 minutes. Following the match, the Frenchman said that though he respects the Serb a lot, losing to him was frustrating.

The scoreline suggests Djokovic dominated all the time, but that wasn’t the case in the first set. Djokovic started slowly as he was trailing by 1-3 but recovered from it and won with scores of 6-3.

Moutet failed to capitalize on the lead as Djokovic quickly ended the match to advance to the third round. For Moutet, playing against the 24-time Grand Slam champion was a great experience, praising him for doing a good job for tennis and for lower-ranked players. However, the 25-year-old Frenchman was deeply frustrated with his performance.

I knew I had to go anyway if I wanted to have a chance. I didn't manage to do it. It's super frustrating. It's a great court, a great tournament, an incredible chance to play against him. I would have liked to show a nice part. I'm super disappointed.  Corentin Moutet told We Love Tennis

It was for the second time Moutet locked horns with Djokovic, as he previously faced him at the 2019 ATP Masters 1000 Paris, losing it in straight sets. Djokovic will next face 29th seed Alejandro Tabilo for the first time in his career.

Novak Djokovic assures fans he is all right after bottle hit him on the head

Following the win, Novak Djokovic had no idea that a bottle from a spectator at the Foro Italico would hit him on the head when he was leaving the court and signing autographs. After leaving the court, he went to his hotel to receive medication and assured the fans that he was alright.

Thank you for the messages of concern. This was an accident and I am fine resting at the hotel with an ice pack. See you all on Sunday.  Novak Djokovic wrote on X

The 36-year-old is playing his fourth tournament of the season, having featured in the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and the Monte-Carlo Masters. The season did not start as he wished and to train for the upcoming big events, he missed the Barcelona Open and the Madrid Open.

He is 11 – 4 on the season without a title. The last title he won was at the ATP Finals in November.
