Jannik Sinner’s coach, Simone Vagnozzi, has stated that the world number one will be looking to get ‘revenge’ against Carlos Alcaraz when the two face off in the final at Wimbledon. Sinner cemented his spot in the final of the third Grand Slam of the year after beating former world number one Novak Djokovic in the semifinal in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
It will be Sinner’s first appearance in the final at Wimbledon. He became the second youngest player to secure a place in the final of four consecutive Grand Slams in men’s tennis in the Open era. Sinner will face the defending champion Alcaraz, who secured his spot in the last two after beating America’s Taylor Fritz with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6.
This will be the second consecutive Grand Slam final where Sinner and Alcaraz will face off. They recently featured in the grand finale of the French Open, where Alcaraz came out on top in a five-set thriller with a score of 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6. While doing that, Alcaraz saved three championship points and eventually came out on top in a match that lasted more than five hours and became officially the second-longest final in Grand Slam history in the Open era.
Vagnozzi has been quoted in a report by English media outlet Daily Express, where he stated that Sinner will be out to get his ‘revenge’ against Alcaraz. Vagnozzi was also of the opinion that tennis fans must get used to seeing Sinner and Alcaraz facing off in the final of major events.
“Yes, this will be revenge for Paris,” said Vagnozzi. “And I'll tell you more: I think we'll have to get used to seeing these finals between Jannik and Carlos. At least, I hope so, as a coach and a tennis fan. They're two extraordinary players, with different but complementary characteristics. They can truly write a historic rivalry.”
