Roger Federer dropped 19 games before reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon back in 2004 and he held this record for over two decades. World No.1 Jannik Sinner broke this after beating Pedro Martinez 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in round three of the ongoing Wimbledon.
Sinner played compatriot Luca Nardi to kick-start his campaign, handing him a bagel in the third set. In the following round, twice Aleksandar Vukic lost a set 6-1. Sinner, however, is not paying much heed to the records, as he wants to remain focused because he knows that anything can happen.
Obviously, I enjoyed it so much, watching Roger play. I never played against him in an official match. In the other way, how they played was amazing. Tennis has changed a little bit. That’s for sure. About the games lost, this is whatever. I’m not looking at these kind of records or not. Because I know everything can change very quickly from one round to the other.
Jannik Sinner said at the press conference
Against Martinez, Sinner now holds a 2-0 head-to-head record. Sinner has also equaled the Open Era record for the fewest games dropped before reaching round 16 of Wimbledon as before him, it was done by Jan Kodes in 1972. The 23-year-old has now become the first Italian man in the Open Era to progress to the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament 17 times, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli, who had done this 16 times.
Sinner is chasing his second title of the season after his Australian Open victory back in January. He then played two back-to-back finals (at the Italian Open and the French Open) after returning from his three-month doping ban, losing both to World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz who he could again face if both of them reach the final. Sinner is aiming to win his first Wimbledon title.
Thank you, @Wimbledon

He has never reached the final, producing his best when he advanced to the semifinals in 2023, losing the match to seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic. He is projected to face Djokovic again in the last four. Last year in the grass-court Major, the three-time Grand Slam champion was defeated in the quarterfinals by Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic met Jannik Sinner when the youngster was working with coach Riccardo Piatti, who also used to coach the Serb. Sinner always credited Djokovic for influencing his game and received praise from the 24-time Grand Slam champion for becoming one of the best players on the tour.
Riccardo would then ask me to give advice, some guidance to Jannik. So we would talk quite a bit. I would always be happy to share. It’s amazing to see his journey, to see how good he has become, and a dominant force in men’s tennis.
Novak Djokovic said at the press conference
It was Sinner who ended Djokovic’s run in the French Open this year, beating him in straight sets in the semifinals to take a 5-4 head-to-head lead. The World No.1 will next face Grigor Dimitrov. Djokovic, after knocking out compatriot, Miomir Kecmanovic, scheduled a fourth-round clash with Alex de Minaur.
The 38-year-old was scheduled to play the Aussie in last year’s Wimbledon quarterfinal, but an injury forced the latter to withdraw before the match. While de Minaur has not yet progressed beyond the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event, Djokovic, before this season, has made it to the final of every Wimbledon he played since 2018.
He last won the title in 2022 by beating Nick Kyrgios. In the last two seasons, Carlos Alcaraz denied him his eighth title in the grass-court Major.
