Jannik Sinner defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets to reach the final of the 2025 US Open in New York. The World No.1 is into his fifth consecutive Grand Slam final and fourth this year following his win over the Canadian star. By reaching the US Open final, he broke several records on tour.
Sinner became the fourth man in the Open Era to reach the finals of all four Grand Slams in a season after Rod Laver, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. The Italian star has now taken a step closer to breaking Federer’s record of being the only man to defend the US Open singles title. The Swiss legend achieved that on five consecutive seasons, from 2004 to 2008.
The 24-year-old is the fourth man to reach five consecutive Grand Slam finals in the Open Era after Federer, Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal. Sinner now bids to become the second man in the history of the men’s tennis tournament to win both the Australian Open and US Open in two consecutive seasons, since Federer (2006 and 2007).
The World No.1 currently holds a 27-match winning streak on hard courts at Grand Slams. His last loss came in the fourth round of the 2023 US Open against Alexander Zverev. At 24 years and 21 days, Sinner bids to become the youngest man in the finals of all Grand Slam events in one season, surpassing Federer’s (25 years and 33 days) in 2006.
During Sinner’s post-match press conference, he was informed about all the records and stats he had after securing his place in the final of the US Open. The four-time Grand Slam winner revealed that consistency on the court in major tournaments is the reason behind the stats:
Well, amazing stats. You know, I would have never thought that I would make this when I turned pro, and now I find myself here. So it’s amazing. I think, you know, five straight Grand Slam finals, it’s something great. The consistency and putting myself there in the later stages of the biggest tournaments we have, it’s amazing, no. But in the same time, I know it’s in the back of my head, whatever I’m doing, but in the same time whatever is done is done.
Sinner will now face the tough task of winning the US Open as he faces his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, in the final. Alcaraz leads 9-5 in their head-to-head record and has won six of their seven meetings on tour. Sinner’s most recent win over the Spaniard came at the Wimbledon Championships in July.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are set to compete for who will be at the top of the ATP rankings at the US Open final. If Alcaraz wins the title on Sunday (September 7), he will leave New York at the top of the men’s rankings, while extending his lead in the ATP Live Race to Turin to a remarkable 2,590 points. Sinner will face an uphill task to finish the year as World No.1.
However, Sinner is not looking to let the pressure be on him ahead of his encounter against Alcaraz. He revealed after his win against Felix Auger-Aliassime that he’s happy with the way his rivalry with Alcaraz has been and looks forward to their encounter at the Arthur Ashe Stadium:
I feel like our rivalry has started here really, playing an amazing match. We are two different players now, different confidence, too. So let’s see what’s coming. We’ve played quite a lot this year, so we know each other very well.
Sinner and Alcaraz have faced each other once at the US Open in their careers and that came in 2022 in the quarter-finals, with the latter beating the former in five sets. Sinner will be hoping to earn his revenge against the Spaniard.
