The past weekend at the All England Club has been a redeeming one for Jannik Sinner. The Italian clinched his first Grand Slam title outside of hard court, his first title win since returning from the three-month doping suspension, and his first win over Carlos Alcaraz after having lost the previous five matches against him, including the heartbreaking Roland Garros final.
Alcaraz was the strong favorite to win the Wimbledon title this year, entering the tournament as the two-time defending champion and having won the Queen’s Club Championships as well earlier in the grass swing.
However, Sinner made sure to not repeat the mistakes from his Roland Garros final when he faced Alcaraz this time, as he sealed the victory 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 against the Spaniard, snapping his 24-match win streak. Speaking to CNBC about the advice he received from his coaches, Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill, after this title win, Sinner said:
I have for sure, from my coaches, and the thing is very easy, it’s keep, keep smiling, you know, because it’s we live tennis, and then for so many tournaments a year, and it’s all part of the journey and the process and the hard work you put in, but in the same time, you have to enjoy it, because if you don’t enjoy it, then it’s gonna get very, very heavy at times…
Vagnozzi and Cahill have been a part of Sinner’s team since 2022. Prior to coaching Sinner, Cahill had coached the likes of Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, and Simona Halep to Grand Slam victories. The four-time Grand Slam champion also emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with good company outside the tennis court.
This title win also means some impressive records for Sinner. The 23-year-old is the first Italian to win a Wimbledon title. At 12,030 ranking points, he is also the fifth player to cross 12,000 ATP ranking points, following the Big 4. He has slightly improved his head-to-head record against rival Alcaraz to 5-8.
After his Wimbledon triumph, Jannik Sinner is set to compete at the Canadian Open, a Masters 1000 tournament. First held in 1881, it is the second-oldest active tennis tournament in the world, with the Wimbledon Championships being the oldest.
This hard court tournament is scheduled to take place from 27 July to 7 August 2025 in Toronto. Sinner has won this tournament once in 2023, when he defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets in the final. It marked his maiden Masters 1000 title.
With five titles, Rafael Nadal holds the record for the most number of title wins in this tournament. Later in the North American hard court swing, Sinner will be defending his Cincinnati Masters and US Open titles. He defeated home favorite Frances Tiafoe in straight sets in Cincinnati last year and defeated another home favorite, Taylor Fritz, in straight sets at the US Open last year.
If Sinner defends his US Open title, he will be the next person since Roger Federer to do so. Federer clinched five consecutive US Open titles from 2004 to 2008. Federer ties with Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors for the most number of titles at the US Open.
