Jannik Sinner earned his place in the final of the Wimbledon Championships for the first time in his career after beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Friday (July 11). However, the World No.1 wore a right arm sleeve during the encounter with Djokovic because of his elbow injury. He has now given details about the injury ahead of his championship match on Sunday (July 13).

Sinner suffered an elbow injury during his fourth-round clash against Grigor Dimitrov on Monday (July 7) at the Center Court. It happened during the first set when he tried to change direction to hit the ball, he slipped on the grass court and fell with his right elbow. He later received a medical timeout for treatment before returning to the court.

But he never played his best level, as Dimitrov dominated the game and was two sets up before sustaining a right pectoral muscle injury while trying to hit a volley in the third set. Sinner scaled through to the quarter-finals but didn’t train the following morning because of the injury, but he went on to beat Ben Shelton 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4.

He showed no sign of any injury in his semi-final clash against Djokovic even though he wore a white sleeve on his right arm. The Italian wasted no time to beat the 24-time Grand Slam winner 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the final. He now leads Djokovic 6-4 in their head-to-head record, and he’s now the second player to beat the Serbian legend five times in a row, just after Rafael Nadal.

He will now take on Carlos Alcaraz in his first Wimbledon final. It will be their second meeting at the All England Club, with Sinner winning the first in 2022. Ahead of the clash, the 23-year-old revealed that there’s no issue with his elbow and that there will be no excuse for not being at his best against the Spaniard:

No issue for Sunday. As I said after playing Ben, there are no excuses. I think we are handling this small problem at the moment very well. I was much more concerned in Ben’s match in the quarters. Today I felt quite good already in the warm up. This morning was good. No concerns.

Alcaraz currently leads Sinner 8-4 in their head-to-head record and has won all their last five matches on tour. The Spaniard is the favorite to win the match, having never lost in a Grand Slam final. Also, he’s the defending champion and is seeking to become the first Spanish player to win it three times.

Jannik Sinner relishing another clash with Carlos Alcaraz in the final of Wimbledon

Just over 30 days ago, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz clashed at the French Open final, where the latter overcame the former in a five-set thriller. Sinner was two sets up before Alcaraz completed a comeback in five hours and 29 minutes, which was the longest final in the history of the tournament.

They will face each other for the third time this season. Sinner has learnt from his mistakes at the final, where he slipped three championship points in the fourth round that gave Alcaraz the momentum to come back. Ahead of their encounter, Sinner revealed that he relishes another clash with the Spaniard:

The surface is different, he is the favorite, having won here twice in a row. He is once again in the final. Beating him on grass is very challenging, but I relish these challenges. I enjoy the face-off and attempting to see what I can do and achieve.

Since September 2023, Sinner has just lost 11 of his 127 matches on tour. However, five of the eleven losses have come against Alcaraz, which means the 22-year-old has found a tactic to beat Sinner every time.
