Jannik Sinner shares his thoughts on Alexander Bublik’s struggles during their US Open match

Jannik Sinner looked more like himself again in his latest outing, putting aside any questions raised by his earlier match against Denis Shapovalov.

He made light work of Alexander Bublik to reach the quarter-finals, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 win in under an hour and a half.

Bublik’s unpredictable style always adds a layer of intrigue. He’d already beaten Sinner once this season and had the kind of game that could cause problems for anyone on his day.

But this time around, Bublik couldn’t keep up. Sinner found another gear early on and never looked back.

Sitting at the top of the rankings comes with its own set of expectations. Every slip is magnified, every win measured against what people think you should be doing. So when Sinner took apart Bublik so efficiently after a shaky match earlier in the tournament, it felt like he’d sent out a clear message.

Jannik Sinner responds to questions about Alexander Bublik’s performance

There were a few reasons that could explain why Bublik had an off day, but the main one was simply how well Sinner played.

Sinner, not one to draw attention to himself, instead pointed out: “We don’t have to forget that he had a five-set match and it finished very late against Tommy [Paul], he was a different player.

“It can happen. This is the sport. Some days they are good and some days they are not good. Maybe I will have a day where things don’t work and I lose easily. You never know what is happening.

“It is very unpredictable, the sport. I tried to move him around, tried to see how he was moving and make it more on the physical side.”

“Today I played some good tennis at times, at times he gave me some free points. I just tried to stay as consistent as possible, and I think that today, that was maybe the main key.”

Sinner’s win over Bublik quiets any talk of vulnerability

There had been talk in the locker room after his previous match that Sinner might be showing signs of vulnerability. That conversation won’t be happening anymore.

Bublik has been one of the tour’s most in-form players this year, with only Carlos Alcaraz collecting more ATP titles in 2024 than him.

Sinner put any doubts about his form behind him by dominating a player who’s had an impressive season so far.

If Sinner keeps playing like this, it’s hard to see anyone stopping him from reaching the final – though we’ve seen how unpredictable tennis can be.
