Jasmine Paolini was one of the biggest storylines in 2024. The Italian player played the finals Roland Garros and Wimbledon last season. However, the potential didn’t come to fruition for most of 2025.
Despite winning the Italian Open this year, she has succumbed in the Grand Slam stages. Despite losing the Cincinnati Open final, Paolini believes that she’s recovering the form that made her one of the best players in the world last year. Paolini said on UbiTennis:
To be honest, I am not always like this, obviously. But when I give it my all and do my best, then yes. I could have done better, of course. But I was present in every point, even in difficult situations, I tried to react. So I don’t know, I also try to go all the way. They were ten very positive days after a very tough month and a half for me. I gave my all. It’s okay.
Paolini changed her coach after exiting Wimbledon early last month. That decision has proved fundamental as the results have picked up since. Now, Paolini can look forward to the US Open with full optimism. She withdrew from the US Open mixed doubles, where she was partnering Lorenzo Musetti.
Iga Swiatek said her Cincinnati Open triumph has given her extra belief ahead of the US Open. The world number three defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4 to win her first title at the WTA 1000 event in Ohio. She did not drop a set all week, showcasing dominant form.
The Polish star will now head to New York aiming for her second US Open crown. She already lifted the Wimbledon title last month and is chasing another Grand Slam title in what has become a strong season turnaround.
In the final, Paolini started fast with a 3-0 lead, but Swiatek responded by taking five straight games to claim the opening set. The second set saw several service breaks, but the 2022 US Open champion broke again in the seventh game and closed out the match soon after.
Swiatek finished with nine aces and converted all six of her break chances. The win marked her 11th WTA 1000 trophy, putting her just two shy of Serena Williams’ record. She will also compete in the new US Open mixed doubles format, pairing up with Norway’s Casper Ruud.
Italian tennis star Jasmine Paolini fell short in the Cincinnati Open final as she was beaten by Iga Swiatek in straight sets. The Italian, aiming for her third WTA 1000 trophy and second this season after winning in Rome, was edged out 7-5, 6-4. Despite the loss, she still gained valuable points and prize money.
Paolini earned 650 points for reaching the final but dropped 120 from last year’s third-round finish, giving her a net gain of 530. This result pushed her up one spot in the WTA rankings to No. 8, while Amanda Anisimova slipped to No. 9. She also collected $391,600 in prize money, taking her career earnings past $12.2 million.
Swiatek, meanwhile, secured her first Cincinnati crown and 11th WTA 1000 title overall. It was her maiden win in Ohio and extended her remarkable record at this level, leaving only Dubai and Beijing missing from her list of conquests.
The Polish star received a full 1,000 points since she had no ranking defense from last year’s event. That boost moved her back to No. 2 in the world, overtaking Coco Gauff but still trailing Aryna Sabalenka. The victory also followed her Wimbledon triumph, marking a strong turnaround after a difficult start to the season.
