No one really doubted whether Jannik Sinner would be able to play to his full potential after his comeback. Sinner did not disappoint as he has breezed past Argentina’s Mariano Navone to secure victory for the first time since the Australian Open final this January.
Because of the doping ban, he missed four Masters 1000 tournaments as well as other events of the 500 category. Four-time Grand Slam champion Jim Courier, following Sinner’s second-round win, praised the youngster for maintaining his level despite his three-month absence.
They may not have had the same low expectations in the stands. They were excited to see Sinner back on court here in Rome and he did not disappoint. If he had any nerves or rust he was not showing it early on. It looked very, very similar to the guy we last saw in Australia holding the trophy.

His doping case took more than a year to resolve. The three-time Grand Slam champion from Italy failed the drug test at the start of the 2024 season and avoided the ban because the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted his explanation of being a victim of accidental contamination. His former physio, Giacomo Naldi, had used a spray containing clostebol, and the drug transferred into Sinner’s body during physiotherapy sessions.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) stepped in, approaching the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to ban him for one or more than one year. But WADA, before the scheduled CAS hearing, resolved the case and gave the World No.1 a ban of three months.

Over the recent months, tennis fans have seen how Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner push each other to be better players. So Alcaraz could not be more happy with Sinner’s comeback as the former now expects him to up his own level thanks to competition from his Italian rival.
I have seen him around, for me, it’s great to have him back. Honestly, I need him on the tour because, I mean, he pushes me to be a better player and give 100% every day, to be better. Of course, I am a fan of tennis, and I think that tennis needs him, to bring in new fans.
Carlos Alcaraz told Tennis Channel after his second-round match
Alcaraz and Sinner have locked horns with each other 10 times with the former edging the World No.1 6-4 in their head-to-head encounters. They are yet to meet this season.
Last year, they met thrice in official events, the results of which ended in Sinner’s favor. The 23-year-old lost just six matches last year, half of which were from the Spaniard.
Sinner could set up a clash with the four-time Grand Slam champion, if both of them reach the final of the Italian Open. Alcaraz has reached the fourth round of the Italian Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career and if he reaches the quarterfinals, he will reach the last eight of all the nine Masters 1000 tournaments.
Alcaraz, before setting up the fourth-round clash with Karen Khachanov , went past two Serbian aces, Dusan Lajovic and Laslo Djere. Sinner, on the other hand, has set up a third-round clash with Jesper de Jong against whom he leads 1-0 in the head-to-head clash. The three-time Grand Slam champion, before reaching the final, could run into Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals and Alex de Minaur in the semifinals.
Sinner is making his first appearance in the tournament since 2023 as last year he skipped it due to an injury. He has not yet reached the final and his best performance came in 2022 when he advanced to the quarterfinals.

Novak Djokovic's father target of smear campaign in retaliation for Serbian supporting protests against President Vucic
Reports have surfaced that Srdjan Djokovic, father of former World No.1 Novak Djokovic, has been targeted with a character assassination campaign by Serbian media. The campaign allegedly originated after 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic publicly voiced his support for students in Serbia who are protesting against Aleksandar Vucic, the country's president. The students have been speaking out against Vucic as they demand for systematic change in the government. In a report by German newspaper Neue Zurcher Zeitung, journalist Jaschar Dugalic discussed how the narrative around Djokovic changed after the ATP superstar's decision to move his family to Athens, Greece became public. "When information reached the public that Djokovic and his family were planning to move to Athens, the same newspaper labeled him a false patriot, who had presented himself as a symbol of Serbia for years, only to now flee to Greece," wrote Dugalic. Smear campaign was initiated by an ally of the president, says Dugalic The journalist highlighted how the campaign against Srdjan Djokovic was kicked off by an associate of president Vucic. This ally happens to be a Serbian entrepreneur and has also been firmly outspoken against the students protests. "A few days ago, an entrepreneur, an opponent of the protest, published a video in which he links Djokovic's father to an alleged pedophile," continues Dugalic. "Vucic himself presents himself as a calm father of the nation. "After Djokovic failed to reach the Wimbledon final, there was no mockery. On the contrary: 'That man is a legend of Serbia. I support him wholeheartedly. He can speak against me as much as he wants and support my opponents. But to say something bad about him – that is stupid and ridiculous,' the 'Informer' quoted the president." Dugalic is referring to comments made by Vucic after Djokovic failed to reach the final at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. Conversely, although the 24-time Grand Slam champion has sided with the students against Vucic, Djokovic has refrained from making any public statements about the president. The former World No.1 recently announced he would not be competing at next week's Cincinnati Open.

New York Jets May Soon Be Done With Former Green Bay Packers Receiver Allen Lazard Former Packers receiver Allen Lazard was always a favorite of Aaron Rodgers during their time together in Green Bay. When Rodgers left the franchise, Lazard ended up following the quarterback to the New York Jets. While the Rodgers era for Gang Green has gone up in flames, Lazard remains on the roster – for now. Lazard entered camp as the presumed second receiver behind Garrett Wilson, but so far, fellow veteran Josh Reynolds has seemingly beaten out Lazard for the second spot. A former Detroit Lion, Reynolds has reportedly been building a good rapport with new signal-caller Justin Fields, leaving Lazard potentially relegated to slot duties. Although the Jets have receiver depth problems, some experts don’t believe that Lazard will survive cuts. The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt has stated that he does not expect Lazard to be on the 53-man roster. Some names behind Lazard on the current depth chart include veteran Tyler Johnson and rookie Arian Smith, both of whom have had flashes of ability in camp so far. Several of the younger players also offer one thing that Lazard notably doesn’t – the ability to play on special teams. If Lazard is cut by the team, it would mean the team would have moved on from another former Packer after dumping both Rodgers and Davante Adams this summer. Can Former Green Bay Packers Receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling Stick in Seattle? Marquez Valdes-Scantling was a member of the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2021, playing out his rookie contract with the team while being a big part of the offense. He had over 2,000 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns for the green and gold before leaving for Kansas City in free agency. In 2025, Valdes-Scantling was with the New Orleans Saints until he signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks worth around $4 million. Despite the 29-year-old being a proven veteran and solid deep threat, Valdes-Scantling currently finds himself near the edge of the Seahawks roster. Rookie receiver Tory Horton has already surpassed Valdes-Scantling on the depth chart and has been the fourth receiver in the team’s first-team rotation so far. Valdes-Scantling has been relegated to the second unit in training camp practices as of early August. Respected NFL writer Brady Henderson has said that Valdes-Scantling has “barely made any” plays throughout camp so far, whereas Horton has continued to catch eyes and has been nicknamed “Jerry Rice Jr.” by teammate Tariq Woolen. Like Lazard, Valdes-Scantling does not offer much on special teams either, and although the Seahawks would love to have a deep threat to compliment Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp, if Valdes-Scantling does not show up in camp, the team could move on from the former Green Bay Packer with little financial consequence.
Celtics’ Georges Niang Trade Wasn’t Just About Salary Dump
The Boston Celtics have made yet another curious offseason move, trading 32-year-old 3-point specialist Georges Niang and two second-round picks to the Utah Jazz in exchange for RJ Luis Jr., an undrafted rookie on a two-way contract. On the surface, this trade was more or less a salary dump. While a rebuilding team, the Jazz are expected to absorb Niang’s 2024-25 salary ($8.2 million) in the trade exception they generated from shipping John Collins to the Los Angeles Clippers. This reduced Boston’s luxury tax by $50 million, according Third Apron salary cap expert Yossi Gozlan. For their efforts, the Jazz not only got a pair of second-rounders but a veteran that can teach their young players the nuances of professionalism. Celtics’ Georges Niang Trade Wasn’t Just About Salary Dump Though the Celtics obviously wanted to reduce their bill, the deal wasn’t just about that. Boston genuinely wanted Luis, per ZAGSBLOG draft expert Adam Zagoria. With that in mind, he entered the 2025 NBA Draft out of St. John’s, he played his freshman season at local UMass. That season, he averaged 11.5 points per game on 45.5 percent from the field. He also earned 10 starts, averaging 15.5 points per game in those contests. As a junior in 2024-25, Luis exploded for 18.2 points per game. His season ended on a low note. In a nine-point loss to Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 32, he went just 3-17 from the field, scoring nine points. Nonetheless, his body of work shouldn’t be overshadowed by the last sentence. Nor should the pedigree he enters the NBA with. In 2024-25, he was a Consensus All-American. His father, Reggie Charles, was a professional basketball player who spent 15 seasons overseas. For the last two seasons of his college career, he was coached by Rick Pitino. The Celtics undoubtedly have a complex history with their former head coach but there’s no denying his greatness at the collegiate level. What Can RJ Luis Jr. Bring To The Celtics? Flawed though he may be, Luis is a good get for Boston, especially on a two-way contract. With Jayson Tatum likely to miss at least the first half of 2025-26 after tearing his Achilles in the 2025 NBA Playoffs, the Celtics have a lot of minutes to fill in at forward. As a result, players like 2023 No. 38 pick Jordan Walsh and 2025 No. 28 pick Hugo Gonzalez have a real chance of barging into the rotation. In a vacuum, they’re both rotation-caliber forwards but they’re raw, particularly offensively. That being said, if they’re trying to step into Tatum’s shoes, their limitations at that end are problematic. Tatum’s one of the most dangerous scorers in the league, averaging 27.5 points per game over the past five seasons. Luis probably won’t explode onto the season looking like a perennial All-Star. Still, he’s a more masterful scorer than either Walsh or Gonzalez right now. In the open court, he’s exciting, like many athletic wings with his length (6-foot-7). Yet, he’s not refined to impacting the game on the break. In the halfcourt, he’s able to use his handle and footwork to create space whether in the drive or in the post. Indeed, utilizing his instincts and body control, he’s actually pretty nifty with the ball in his hands. He even follows up his own shot, leading to frequent putbacks. Though he doesn’t have elite efficiency in any area, he’s a multifaceted offensive player who also has a knack for playmaking, particularly with regard to pocket passes. To improve his efficiency, he should cut down on his off-the-dribble attempts due to his tendency to take tough jumpers. All the same, while Boston waits for Tatum to return, the 22-year-old could play an important role.
Athletics catcher's historic performance part of team's 16-run onslaught against Nationals
The Athletics have not had much to smile about in 2025, but Tuesday night was a totally different story. The Washington Nationals, who had lost five straight coming into the game, had no answer for the offensive onslaught as the Athletics won handily, 16-7. Led by the trio of catcher Shea Langeliers, right fielder Brent Rooker and center fielder JJ Bleday, the Athletics combined for 16 runs, 24 hits and never looked back after a five-run first inning. Langeliers became the first Athletics catcher with a five-hit game since 1972, three of which were for home runs. He got the scoring started for the Athletics in the first inning with this 402-foot shot to center field off Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore. Langeliers' second homer of the night came in the fifth when he hit a 387-footer to left off reliever Orlando Ribalta to give the Athletics a 10-1 lead. He capped his second career three-homer game with a 419-foot home run to center off a 94 mph four-seam fastball from Andry Lara to give the Athletics the 11-3 advantage in the seventh. He joins Travis d'Arnaud, Gary Carter and Johnny Bench as the only catchers with multiple three-home run games, per MLB.com's Sarah Langs. Langeliers is the first player since at least 1900 to have three homers in his first career game starting at leadoff (h/t Elias Sports). This double in the eighth secured the five-hit game for Langeliers. Per Langs (h/t Elias Sports), his 15 total bases are tied for the most by a catcher in a game since at least 1900 with Wes Westrum (1950) and Walker Cooper (1949). According to MLB Stats, Langeliers joins Cal Raleigh, Mike Piazza, Earl Williams and Rudy York as the only catchers to hit 20 or more home runs in three of their first four MLB seasons with a minimum of 50 percent of their games at catcher. The Athletics (50-65) are still last in the AL West and have struggled to find any consistency all season. Despite the struggles, Tuesday night was a needed distraction from that on a historic night at the plate from Langeliers.
