Joao Fonseca has not ceased to praise Carlos Alcaraz ahead of their long-awaited clash at the end of the season. It was announced that the Brazilian teenager will take on the World No.1 at the Miami Invitational, an exhibition tournament set to take place in December. It will be their first-ever meeting on the court.
Fans were expecting Alcaraz and Fonseca to face off at the Laver Cup in September, but the Brazilian youngster was not picked by Team World captain Andre Agassi to feature against the Spaniard during their clash against Team Europe. Though, Fonseca never faced Alcaraz, he had a chance of meeting with the Spaniard and other top players in the men’s circuit.
Fonseca has been dubbed the next Roger Federer due to his exceptional style of play and game. The 19-year-old first announced himself on the world stage after beating Andrey Rublev in straight sets at the Australian Open first round. He then claimed his first ATP title at the Argentine Open after beating Francisco Cerundolo.
He has failed to beat any other top 10 player on the court since then, losing twice to Jack Draper and then to Taylor Fritz at the Eastbourne International. Meanwhile, Alcaraz often features in exhibition tournaments after the end of the season as he uses them to prepare for the next tennis calendar year, while also earning a lot of prize money.
During an interview with Brazilian outlet Estadao, the teenage star was asked about his participation in the Miami exhibition event and his relationship with Alcaraz. Fonseca revealed that he has had short conversations with the 22-year-old and World No. 1 on a few occasions, encouraging him to become a better player:
Having the opportunity to gain the experience of these great players is the most important thing for me. Even in a short conversation, we can have a great exchange. It will be a day with lots of lessons, really cool, especially with a guy like him, with whom I’ve always had a good relationship. Whenever we cross paths, we greet each other and chat a little; he’s a really great guy. He encourages us a lot to believe and stay motivated to become better players.
Fonseca didn’t compete in any tournament during the Asian swing as he pulled out of all the tournaments. He’s expected to be back on the court for the European indoor tournaments as he aims to use it as a good preparation for the Next Gen ATP Finals, which he won last year.
The Miami Invitational exhibition tournament would not only see a clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Joao Fonseca, but also a duel between China Open champion and World No.4 Amanda Anisimova against former US Open champion Emma Raducanu. The tournament is expected to attract fans and high attendance.
During the aforementioned interview, Joao Fonseca revealed that despite looking forward to his clash against Alcaraz, he’s expecting a great vibe with the fans at the LoanDepot Park. He pointed out that he expects a lot of Brazilian fans to attend the tournament, which will.be good for him:
I think it’ll be really loud, with a really cool vibe. We both really enjoy playing with the fans, the entertainment, so I think it’ll be fun. I hope there’s more fans on my side and that there are a lot of Brazilians in attendance, but I’m sure the vibe on the court will be good either way.
Alcaraz didn’t take part in the ongoing Rolex Shanghai Masters after withdrawing from the event due to a physical problem. The 22-year-old won the Tokyo Open but twisted his ankle during his opening match against Sebastian Baez. However, he will be back on the court for the Paris Masters and ATP Finals in Turin.
