Joao Fonseca is looking to prove that he can eventually reach the same level as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

There’s plenty of excitement around the 19-year-old, with some predicting that he’ll be challenging Alcaraz and Sinner before too long.

Fonseca got his first chance to test himself against them at Indian Wells, where Sinner came out on top in straight sets. It was a hard-fought match, though.

He wasn’t able to face Alcaraz in Miami but spoke about what sets the Spaniard and Sinner apart from the rest.

Before the second tournament in the sunshine double kicked off, Fonseca sat down with miamiopen.com following his match against Sinner, who went on to win Indian Wells.

While discussing the top two players on the ATP Tour, Fonseca pointed out how consistent Alcaraz and Sinner have been. He described their consistency as “insane” and said they are clearly ahead of the rest of the top 10 at the moment.

“The consistency and the level that both of them (Alcaraz and Sinner) are playing is just insane,” said Fonseca. “Not only am I saying that, but the top five and top 10 players are saying that they are on a different level. I’m working really hard to achieve what those guys are doing.

“They can play at a high level for a longer period, and they don’t usually have a weakness so it’s difficult to play against them. You need to serve well; you need to return well; you need to do everything almost perfectly to win. You can’t always be perfect.”

If he gets past Fabian Marozsan in Miami’s opening round, Fonseca could face Alcaraz for their first-ever matchup.

Joao Fonseca discusses Brazilian fan support ahead of Miami Open

Fonseca is considered one of the most promising prospects in tennis, and he made a solid run to the third round at Miami last year.

His growing popularity became a challenge for organisers last year, leading to a late schedule change before his match against eventual champion Jakub Mensik. The switch was made to help manage the large crowds drawn by the Brazilian youngster.

This year, tournament director James Blake has already confirmed that both Fonseca and Alexandra Eala will have all their matches scheduled on Stadium Court to better handle crowd control from the outset.

Speaking about his rising profile, especially in Miami, Fonseca said he feels better equipped this time around compared to last year.

“A lot of Brazilians [here]. It was important for me, for my development,’’ said Fonseca. “I’m not very used to it yet, but more than last year. I’m a little bit more prepared for a great moment as well.”

This is only their second meeting with Marozsan having won their previous match-up on the clay courts of Rome in 2023. If Fonseca can get past Marozsan this time then he will face world number one Alcaraz in what would be their first ATP Tour meeting.
