The serve is arguably the most important shot in tennis…
Starting a rally off with a thunderous serve often leads to players winning the point.
It is the only shot that a player has full control of, and some who mastered the art, won several Grand Slam titles.
But which player in tennis history had the best serve?
During commentary at this year’s United Cup, Australian tennis legend John Fitzgerald answered that question.
Watching Taylor Fritz play Sebastian Baez at the United Cup, Fitzgerald and commentator Brenton Speed spoke about the American’s serve.
Fitzgerald proceeded to name the player he believes had the best serve he’d ever seen.
“That’s the best serve I’ve seen in my days. Pistol Pete [Sampras],” he said.
“Best second serve ever, especially in tennis that I could remember.”
Sampras’ elite serving guided him to a then-Open Era record 14 Grand Slam titles.
He also held the world number one ranking for 286 weeks, the third most of all time.
Fitzgerald then asked courtside reporter Ryan Harrison to make his pick.
Former doubles star Harrison played some elite servers during his career.
“Other than [John] Isner, those guys that were extremely tall, I would say the best serve I faced was either [Nick] Kyrgios or [Milos] Raonic,” he said.
“They both had unbelievable serves.”
Harrison retired with a losing head-to-head record against two of the three players he named.
In 11 matches with John Isner, Harrison lost eight and won just three.
Isner beat him in two ATP finals at the 2017 and 2018 Atlanta Open.
Against Milos Raonic, Harrison enjoyed more success, winning their head-to-head 2-1.
He struggled against Kyrgios, however, losing to the Aussie all four times they played.
Harrison also lost to Kyrgios in the final of the 2018 Brisbane International.
The American only lost finals to Kyrgios and Isner, which goes some way to explaining why he picked them both.
