Carlos Alcaraz remains unbeaten in 2026, having already claimed two titles this season.
The Spaniard has been playing at a high level and is considered the favourite heading into Indian Wells.
Speaking after Alcaraz’s quarterfinal win over Cameron Norrie, former American player Steve Johnson said that the World No.1 was widening his gap over Jannik Sinner.
But John Isner, Johnson’s fellow American and Nothing Major podcast co-host, didn’t see it that way.
Speaking on Alcaraz’s quarterfinal performance, Johnson said:
“He looked really good. Cam Norrie is a tough out; he’s won this tournament, 2021 maybe, something like that. He’s obviously very comfortable on these courts,” said Johnson.
“The courts are so slow, watching it, you can see the balls get really puffy. At the end of the ball changes, they get slow. That suits Cam pretty well, so he’s done extremely well on these courts.
“But Carlos [Alcaraz] can just hit through anything, I don’t think it matters. His forehand was huge, he served really well, hasn’t lost a match this year and his confidence is at an all-time high.
Johnson also added: “This is Carlos entering a scary territory of just continuing to dominate, not showing any weaknesses, to basically anyone in the world, outside of [Jannik] Sinner, Novak [Djokovic]… maybe a couple of guys can kind of get to him.”
Sam Querrey asked Johnson if he believes Alcaraz has widened the gap to Sinner.
“Yeah, I think so. The only issue was that he’d lose early; he had those a few times, last year, the year prior,” said Johnson.
“That doesn’t even seem like it’s possible anymore.”
Sinner may have lost one game in his previous round but was solid in beating Taylor Fritz. The only way Alcaraz can prove he has widened the gap between himself and Sinner is by taking him down in Sunday’s final.
If both win, they’ll face off in what would be a much-anticipated final. Alcaraz is up against Daniil Medvedev, while Sinner takes on Alexander Zverev. Both matches promise plenty of intrigue.
Alcaraz holds a 6-2 record over Medvedev and has already beaten him twice in previous Indian Wells finals.
Sinner also has the edge over Zverev, leading their head-to-head 6-4. If form holds, Sunday could bring another chapter in one of the sport’s top rivalries. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, March 14th, with the final set for Sunday, March 15th.
