King of Halle: Alexander Bublik wins fifth career title after outplaying Daniil Medvedev

Alexander Bublik completes a dream week, clinching the ATP 500 Halle Open title after overcoming Russia's Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6(4). The Kazakh continues his remarkable form, securing the 5th title of his career, and his second in Halle.

The 27-year-old was on a good winning streak recently, having reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros two weeks prior. This week, he surprisingly defeated World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, which was just a prelude to the great week he would have.

First Set: Bublik's dominance emerges

Bublik was the first to face trouble in the opening set when he faced a break point early on, but he managed to escape unharmed. The Kazakh maintained a notable 85% first-serve percentage, winning 83% of those points, giving his opponent few chances from the baseline. Medvedev maintained consistency with his serve—with a 63% first-serve percentage, winning 58% of those—making it difficult for him to secure easy service games.

The parity held until 3-3, a moment when Bublik would take absolute control of the match. The Kazakh was serving at 3-3, 0-30, and it seemed like the Russian's moment might arrive; however, Bublik didn't hesitate and reeled off 10 consecutive points—securing a break to love and then holding his serve without conceding points—to take the set 6-3 after barely 27 minutes.

Second Set: Bublik holds nerve to secure title

Again in the second set, Bublik seemed more confident on his serve, creating his first break opportunities in the third game, but Medvedev managed to save them. The Russian struggled again to win easy games, while witnessing a precise Bublik who managed to challenge him in rallies and several times hurt Medvedev by forcing him to the net with drop shots and some notable passing shots. Around 3-3, Medvedev again had to save a break point to stay in the game. Bublik also had a complicated moment when he was serving at 4-5 and faced a break point—which would have meant the set for his opponent—but he managed to hold serve.

Everything went to a tie-break, where Medvedev got the first mini-break and managed to go up 4-1. However, Bublik maintained his composure and reeled off 6 consecutive points—two of them on his opponent's serve—and ultimately closed out the victory in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(4). This is Bublik's 5th career title and his second ATP 500 title (both in Halle).

The Kazakh guarantees a seeded spot at Wimbledon by advancing to World No. 30. On the other hand, Medvedev falls in his 6th consecutive final, although he will arrive at Wimbledon back in the Top 10, after advancing to World No. 11. Nevertheless, he couldn't get into the top 8 seeds, so he might face opponents like Alcaraz, Sinner, or Djokovic as early as a potential fourth round.
