An annual tradition returns from June 6-11 at the French Open as Kim Clijsters, John McEnroe, Mats Wilander among others will play in the Legends Trophy. A concept devised by entertainer Mansour Bahrami.
Being played for a number of years, it gives fans opportunities to watch exhibition matches between players who are part of the history of Roland Garros.
Twelve champions in three categories in men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. The pairings change throughout the tournament. Wilander is a three-time champion in the event. McEnroe of course is a finalist in 1984. While 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone also returns to play in the event.
As does Kim Clijsters as well as Lindsay Davenport. Anett Kontaveit who unfortunately had to retire early from the sport due to a crippling back injury is also involved. While from a home hope perspective, it is such players as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, GIlles Simon and Guy Forget who are part of the contingent.
Often tournaments like this and also the Legends Doubles at Wimbledon work out well as often most of these players are on site anyway such as McEnroe, Wilander, Davenport and Clijsters for television networks as commentators or pundits. So with the reduced schedule towards the end of the tournament, it adds an extra facet before a champion is crowned.
