Lorenzo Musetti, the 23 year old Italian, ends the year 2025 ranked eighth in the world and the second highest ranked Italian player behind Jannik Sinner. It was a career best season for Musetti not in terms of titles won as he did not win any but because he breached the top ten and had a great showing overall in the Majors.
Musetti did not quite enjoy the start he would have hoped for in 2025 with a third round exit at the Australian Open and middling results till the clay court season started. However the clay court season was a fantastic one for the Italian.
Musetti reached the finals at the Monte Carlo Masters which was the furthest he has ever been at the Masters 1000 level. He did stretch Carlos Alcaraz to three sets in the final. The Italian then backed that up with semi final appearances in Madrid and Rome. Due to strong results, he entered Roland Garros seeded eighth and a strong chance to make an impact.
The Italian did make a significant impact as he reached the last four at the Majors for a second time. Unfortunately for Musetti, his semi final match against Alcaraz ended with him retiring due to injury early in the fourth set.
The Italian similar to the start of 2025 had no significant results till the US Open. He bowed out in the first round at Wimbledon and dropped out early in the tournaments leading up to the US Open. Luckily for Musetti, something clicked for him at the US Open.
The Italian reached the quarterfinals at the last Major tournament of the year for the first time. He lost to Sinner in an one sided affair in straight sets.
Musetti also reached the finals at Chengdu and Athens losing both in three sets. The Italian was the first alternate for the ATP Finals and after Novak Djokovic withdrew, Musetti made his debut at the year end event. He did manage to win against Alex de Minaur in the group stage but he lost his other two matches against Alcaraz and Fritz and as a result failed to progress to the last four.
While Musetti did have a fantastic year, it will concern him with the amount of losses to the top two players right now – Alcaraz and Sinner. He lost to Alcaraz four times and to Sinner once in 2025. The Italian will definitely need to solve the riddle of Sincaraz if he is to win important titles in his career. Musetti also lost three finals in 2025, one can only hope it does not become a pattern in the Italian’s career.
2026 should see Musetti aim for even greater heights as he has the mentality and the flair in his game style to do so. Watch out for the Italian fight for the Majors more and more consistently.
