Mats Wilander claims Novak Djokovic is ‘probably better now’ than he was during Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s prime few years ago

Seven time singles Grand Slam champion and former tennis player Mats Wilander recently claimed that Novak Djokovic is in much better shape now than he was a few years ago, when his contemporaries Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were in their primes. While Djokovic’s ruthless mentality is formidable, the Swedish opinionated that Djokovic is playing better now compared to a few years ago.

The rivalry between the big-3, consisting of Roger Federer , Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, is well known among the tennis audiences. However, they were all making their debuts on the tour in different times. The last among the three to appear on the tour was Djokovic. Therefore, it is inevitable that the Serb would peak a bit later than the others.

However, former World No.1 Mats Wilander had his own thoughts on the current World No.1’s game. Keeping in mind the Swedish national’s experience on the tour and as an analyst, he is more than qualified to comment on the Serb’s game. In an interview with Eurosport, Wilander said that the Serb dominating at 36-year-old is like flying to the moon.

40 is literally just a number. And in fact, I think he is probably better now than when he was number one ten years ago.

Ten years ago, the Grand Slam events were up for grabs to either of the Big-3. There were also other players like Stan Wawrinka, Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro, who were at their best, fighting for Grand Slams. Therefore, it is inevitable that the Serb is better in the game, especially when there is much lesser contest, compared to last decade.

Mats Wilander comments on possible Djokovic retirement

While the Serb is 36-years-old, he is still going strong on top of the rankings and still winning Grand Slam titles. So, there is no reason for him to even consider retirement. However, with his age, speculations have run rampant by both fans and audiences.

Mats Wilander had made his own comments on the Serb’s possible retirement plans.

I think that's not even close to being in the next year or two. Honestly, I think it's probably four or five years.

Wilander also admitted that the Serb would want to prove to the world that age is nothing but a number. However, speculations of a retirement are being immediately shut down by the Serb.

While at his age, most players retire, it is mostly because their bodies are not willing to co-operate. However, Djokovic has proved on more than one occasion that he has no reason to retire, especially because of his age.
