After Matteo Berrettini withdrew from the Cincinnati Open, many fans feared that he might not be ready in time for the US Open. Unfortunately for Berrettini and his fans, their fears were later realized, as the Italian has withdrawn from the final Slam of the year.

Plagued By Injuries

His latest withdrawal tells the story of his entire career. A supremely talented tennis player, as he has proved on multiple occasions, but consistency has always been an issue, as he has never played a full season without injuries.

The most notable achievement of the Italian’s career came in 2021, when he reached the final of Wimbledon, losing out in four sets to the one and only Novak Djokovic. He maintained a spot in the Top 20 for almost 18 months after that, before injury troubles in the second half of the 2023 season saw him drop drastically, as he finished the year just inside the Top 100.

His troubles didn’t end there, either, as three months into 2024 he found himself ranked 154th in the world–a far cry away from his career-best No.6.

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Despite a difficult start to 2024, Berrettini seemingly got his career back on track, as he won three ATP titles and also reigned supreme in the Davis Cup. His revival was recognized by the ATP, as he won Comeback Player of the Year.

But, in 2025 it all started again. Despite getting his first ever win against Djokovic in Doha and making a solid start to the season, it all came crashing down in Madrid. The 29-year-old retired mid-match against Jack Draper, and did so again just two weeks later in his home country against Casper Ruud.

He was left with no choice but to skip Roland Garros, and went into Wimbledon without playing any warm-up grass tournaments–a surface he is notoriously successful on. As a result, he lost in the first round and hasn’t played since.

The Harsh Truth

Berrettini will end the year having only played two of the four Majors, and amassing just a singular victory at Grand Slam level.

Not only are these injuries taking their toll on his body, but they must also be impacting his mental state. He was visibly upset leaving the court after retiring in Rome against Ruud and gave an understandably dejected press conference.

At 29, he isn’t getting any younger. While there is no doubt that he is clearly an incredible player when fit, his body unfortunately refuses to cooperate with him, and his absence from New York is just the latest addition to his growing list of withdrawals. Will we ever see Berrettini reach the heights he was once capable of again?
