Australia’s Nick Kyrgios has words of praise for Italy’s Jannik Sinner after his incredible triumph at Wimbledon. The 23-year-old defeated the two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the third Grand Slam of the year on Sunday with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
While doing that, Sinner achieved a lot of milestones. He became the first Italian player to lift the Wimbledon title in the singles category. Sinner also managed to defeat Alcaraz after five consecutive defeats, as well, including a five-set heartbreaking defeat at the French Open, where he failed to convert any of the three Championship points.
Kyrgios, who has remained extremely critical of Sinner after he managed to escape a lengthy ban for testing positive in two dope tests in March last year, ended up praising the newly crowned Wimbledon champion for showcasing mental toughness and overcoming different obstacles on his way to lifting his fourth Grand Slam title. Kyrgios also praised Sinner for responding to critics with his racquet.
“The message in the body language, I think Alcaraz was a bit lost for tactics," said Kyrgios. He was going to his box asking, ‘what should I do?’ He lost all rhythm on his serve when he realised that Sinner was going to plant himself on the baseline and really take it to him. Mentally, it’s been a whirlwind of a year and a half for Sinner. With everything, not just the French Open final but with everything outside that was going on. Props to him for just getting back to the drawing board and coming out and playing some great tennis. This is one of many Wimbledon titles I’m assuming for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him come back and win a few more times. Props to everything – it’s not easy to go through all that and come back. I feel like when we see him get on his knees at the end of the match and tap the ground, it’s everything he’s going through or gone through. Props to him to let the racquet do the talking. Maybe I do need to take a page out of his book. No, I’m joking. I’ll never stop talking. The game plan was executed perfectly today. He lost the first but stuck to his guns. A couple of unforced errors, but the backhand line, dictating, he served amazingly at big moments and that helps on the grass."
