Danielle Collins didn't feel entirely satisfied after her significant victory over Iga Swiatek in the third round of the Rome Open, as she recently revealed in an interview on Tennis Channel. The American stated she was happy with her performance but lamented not receiving enough credit, attributing it to a perceived "crisis" in the Polish star's game.
Swiatek has been the undisputed dominator of the clay swing in recent seasons, boasting four French Open and four WTA 1000 titles on clay. According to Collins, her win against Swiatek was downplayed because of Swiatek's recent dip in results, which includes a lack of titles in the past year.
"I thought I played really well against Iga," Collins said. "I didn't get a ton of credit for it after the match, of course. It was more about how poorly she played and everything."
She added, "That can make it difficult to be able to celebrate your wins sometimes, when you feel like you have a good match and are playing well and it's just like whatever. So I was happy about it but the feeling with that wasn't as fun as I imagined."
The former Australian Open runner-up reached the Round of 16 in Rome after defeating Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Iga Swiatek. In the fourth round, she fell to Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in straight sets, making an early exit from the tournament despite having overcome the top favorite.
This week, Collins is competing in the Strasbourg Open, where she has already defeated former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in three sets. In the Round of 16, she will face Emma Raducanu, who is coming off a notable win against Daria Kasatkina. This will be the last tournament for both players before Roland Garros.
