Karolina Muchova's social media painted a much more happier picture than in reality as she continues to struggle with the injury that saw her miss most of last season as she joins Petra Kvitova, Paula Badosa and also Marketa Vondrousova as the latest big name to leave the Italian capital withdrawing through injury.
Muchova underwent surgery in February 2024 and missed out on all of the clay court season apart from Palermo last year and returned to have an exciting end of the season where she reemerged as a top 20 player.
The 28-year-old even had a potential shot at making it to the top 10 given like Jessica Pegula she defends very little points between now and the US Open. But she had to withdraw from the Madrid Open due to illness and now is out of the Rome Open due to injury.
She was scheduled to play Lucia Bronzetti in her opening match but was replaced by Laura Siegemund who took her chance to seal a win. The 37-year-old lost in the qualifying stage of the tournament but then turned to face Bronzetti.
Siegemund prior to tonight had only managed to make it out of the first round once in singles where she beat Zheng Qinwen en route to making the Australian Open third round.
But for Muchova, it is a damning sign also for the top Czech stars. Her, Vondrousova and Barbora Krejcikova have barely played in 2025 due to injury and it keeps being an issue. While for those fans of the 28-year-old it is more heartbreak that a player so talented can't remain injury free.
