New Legacy: Coco Gauff makes history as first American woman since Serena Williams to win multiple Grand Slams

Coco Gauff claimed her second Grand Slam title this Saturday, overcoming Aryna Sabalenka in three sets. The 21-year-old star became the 5th American player to win multiple major titles this century… the last of whom was Serena Williams in 2002, before Gauff was even born.

Gauff's stellar campaign at Roland Garros concluded with her defeating Sabalenka – a three-time Grand Slam champion – 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4. In the years following Serena Williams' dominance, four American players had won majors, but none on more than one occasion.

Sloane Stephens (US Open 2017), Sofia Kenin (Australian Open 2020), Coco Gauff (US Open 2023), and Madison Keys (Australian Open 2025) had lifted major titles, but none had done so more than once, and all had, in fact, fallen in a major final.

However, Gauff broke that streak for American women, becoming the first American to win more than one Slam title since Serena Williams achieved her second – precisely at the French Open in 2002. That same year, Serena would go on to win Wimbledon and the US Open, ending the season as the undisputed World No. 1 with one of the best seasons of her career.

Additionally, Jennifer Capriati (Roland Garros 2001) and Venus Williams (US Open 2000, 2001) had achieved more than one major title since the turn of the century.

Gauff will remain as World No. 2, still holding a significant 3,500-point lead in the rankings over Aryna Sabalenka. Her next challenge will be at Wimbledon, where she has never advanced beyond the fourth round.
