Nick Kyrgios pulls out of US Open after yet another failed attempted comeback

Nick Kyrgios has been struggling with a whole host of injury problems in recent years, which has seen him participate in just one Grand Slam in three years - the 2025 Australian Open. He was hoping to make a return in the upcoming US Open, but that dream has crashed after he pulled out of the event.

The Aussie had originally been put down to compete in both the singles and the mixed doubles event, recently concluding at Flushing Meadows. He was going to partner four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, but was forced to miss out due to his 'cooked' knee.

This knee has been the reason for his disappearance from the court for the majority of the past three years, unable to string a consistent run of tournaments together. He has only managed to play two Masters 1000 tournaments this year - both at the start in Indian Wells, where he retired, and Miami. This was before his last Grand Slam appearance in Melbourne, where he lost in straight sets to Jacob Fearnley before retiring in the doubles.

He was unable to replicate his triumph in 2022, when he would go on to lift the doubles title with fellow Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis. That same year, he would reach the singles final at Wimbledon. He went a set up against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, but was unable to extend his lead over the Serbian, who took home yet another Grand Slam title. He followed that up with a quarter-finals run in the US Open, losing a thriller to Russian Karen Khachanov in five sets.

After this success, he was forced to pull out of the Australian Open on the eve of the tournament, citing a knee injury that affected his movement on court. He returned for the grass season, but only managed one tournament at Stuttgart, before taking an extended leave of absence as he combatted his injury woes away from the court.

After not playing a single tie for over a year, he attempted a comeback from the end of 2024, starting in doubles but aiming to return to singles action. After Miami, his knee issues returned. His original plans to play doubles at Roland Garros were painfully scrapped, which would have been his first appearance at the major since 2017. He was poised to make a comeback at Wimbledon, but again stumbled into another setback, preventing him from competing on his favourite surface for the third year in a row.

His most recent match came in Washington in the doubles alongside Gael Monfils, as he cited a trip to Flushing Meadows. By the looks of it, it seems that his injury problems have once again got the better of him, leaving him sidelined for yet another major event.

He will be replaced by a lucky loser for the upcoming tournament.
