Iga Swiatek claimed her first Wimbledon Championships title after beating Amanda Anisimova in straight sets. The 24-year-old became the first Polish player to win the Wimbledon singles title in the Open Era. Tennis star Nick Kyrgios now ranks Swiatek higher than Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka in the greatest players of this generation.
The 2025 Wimbledon triumph is Swiatek’s sixth career Grand Slam. The former World No. 1 had previously won the French Open and the US Open. She claimed the Roland Garros four times, while winning at the Flushing Meadows once. The Polish star has now won Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces (grass, clay, and hard courts).
Meanwhile, Sabalenka and Gauff have not achieved the same milestone as Swiatek. Sabalenka has won three Grand Slams, all coming on hard courts at the Australian Open and the US Open. While Gauff has won two major titles, one at the US Open and the other at Roland Garros. Also, Swiatek has won 23 singles titles, Sabalenka 20, while Gauff has 10.
Ahead of Wimbledon, Swiatek was not among the strong favorites to win the title. She had not won a tour-level title for over a year, while Sabalenka had reached two consecutive Grand Slam finals, and Gauff had just won the French Open. But the World No.3 claimed the title after beating Anisimova 6-0, 6-0.
During a conversation on TNT Sports after Swiatek’s victory, Nick Kyrgios revealed that the 24-year-old winning Wimbledon has sealed her place among the tennis immortals. He then added that she’s currently ranked above Gauff and Sabalenka in the greats of this generation:
You win Wimbledon, she’s a multiple Grand Slam champion, achieved tennis immortality, is one of the greats of this generation and still in the midst of her prime. We are witnessing one of the greats of the women’s side and today was a dominant performance. What does this do for her confidence all year around? Maybe she’s got that confidence to dominate the top of the women’s game. Right now, it’s Coco [Gauff], [Aryna], Sabalenka and Iga. Now I put her right at the top for the US Open.
Swiatek became the second player in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam final with a double bagel after Steffi Graf at the Roland Garros in 1988. She is also 6-0 in Grand Slam finals after winning against Anisimova. She will now hope to continue with the form at the North American hard-court season.
Iga Swiatek went through a very tough patch in her career during the clay-court season. The six-time Grand Slam champion failed to defend the Madrid Open, Italian Open, and French Open, which saw her drop to No.8 in the WTA rankings. However, it was during the grass-court season that she reached her first tour-level final in a year.
During her press conference, she revealed that she’s still surprised at winning the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. She added that she’s happy with the whole process she had to go through to win the title:
It’s something that is just surreal. I feel like tennis keeps surprising me, and I keep surprising myself. I’m really happy with the whole process, how it looked like from the first day we stepped on a grass court. I feel like we did everything for it to go in that direction without expecting it, just working really hard. It means a lot, and it gives me a lot of experience. I don’t even know. I’m just happy.
Swiatek reached her first final in over a year at the Bad Homburg and was her first final on grass. Historically, she had not been a grass-court expert and has often struggled on the surface. But after winning Wimbledon, she has finally found the right tactics on the surface.
