Injury setbacks in the unlikeliest times aren’t new for athletes. But this time, Aryna Sabalenka was at the receiving end of it.
After the magnificent honour of the Sunshine Double, the 27-year-old Belarusian was ready for another victory. But as the fate would have it, Sabalenka had to draft an Instagram story to announce the mishap.
“I’m very sad to say that I won’t be able to play the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix this year”, she wrote on April 9. “Unfortunately, I suffered an injury after Miami, and even though I tried everything to recover in time, I’m not ready to compete. I’m really sorry to miss this amazing tournament.”

The worst part is that she really loves “coming back to Stuttgart. The atmosphere, the fans, and the support” are all very special. And the WTA No.1 was “really hoping to have another chance to fight for that Porsche.”
This could’ve been her 5th time at Stuttgart. Over her career, Sabalenka competed in it 4 times, reaching the final round in all of them. But a title never came, and this time, she was really hoping to change it.
But now Sabalenka will have to wait till 2027 for her Porsche win. And per her message, she’ll try again. However, this really exposed the downside of the sport once more.
The WTA schedule is infamous for taking a toll on the players’ health. But this season, Sabalenka had a specific approach, which worked for her. But she didn’t hesitate to be vocal about all these.
“The season is definitely insane, and that’s not good for all of us, as you see so many players getting injured”, she said in January. “The rules are quite tricky with mandatory events, but I’m still skipping a couple of events to protect my body, because I struggled a lot last season.”
This year, Sabalenka skipped both the Qatar Open and the Dubai Tennis Championships. And prioritising her health showed fruition, as she returned victorious from both the Indian Wells and Miami Open.
Although missing this event was sad, taking care of her health will surely show better results in the long run.
