Novak Djokovic overcame both Cameron Norrie and a worrying physical setback to book his place in the second week of the US Open. The Serbian star dropped a set but ultimately prevailed, moving one step closer to another deep run in New York.
The key moment of concern came late in the opening set. Leading 5–3, Djokovic pulled up after an intense rally, grimacing in discomfort. He immediately called for a medical timeout (MTO) and left the court for treatment, sparking speculation about a potential back injury.
Speaking to the media afterward, Djokovic explained exactly what happened and made a point to clarify the situation with Norrie:
“Yeah, it did happen. I was five, three up. I think it was 30-0, it was one, quite an exciting point, and I was at the net, and I was kind of moving in the right direction, and I caught the ball. It just made like, quick move and reaction,” said Djokovic.
“I felt, felt the left side of my back so, and I finished that game, and I just felt like I, you know, I needed treatment,” he added.
Djokovic said he later extended an apology at the net after the match, and told Norrie, it was not an intentional disruption strategy from him.
“And again, you know, I told Cameron at the net, like I don’t want to, you know, I don’t know if he thinks that I was doing that on purpose to bother him or not, because it’s absolutely not, was not my intention, but I felt like I needed that treatment, and I felt better after that,” said the Serb in his post-match press conference.
“You know, when the meds kicked in as well, I don’t know when it gets cold tomorrow, I’ll see what the reality is,” said the former champion.
“But yeah, I was lucky, not to, you know, have that burden stay there. I was just there for a few games, and after that, it was fine,” added Djokovic.
Djokovic looked more comfortable as the match wore on, aided by the treatment and medication. Despite conceding a set, he maintained control and ensured his passage into the Round of 16.
Waiting for him there will be Jan-Lennard Struff, the German qualifier who produced one of the upsets of the tournament by dismissing Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. Struff’s aggressive baseline game and booming serve could pose a challenge for Djokovic.
As Djokovic continues his quest for another Grand Slam title, all eyes will be on his back and whether the problem resurfaces in the cooler conditions expected in the coming days.
