What Novak Djokovic must do at this stage of his career to win a Grand Slam title? Even the man with 24 Grand Slam titles is clueless at present.
At the press conference after his defeat to Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the Wimbledon semifinal on Friday (July 11), Djokovic said he is determined to win Grand Slam titles but after going deep into the tournament, his body doesn’t listen.
In the ongoing event, Djokovic had been producing strong performances but in the semifinals, it took Sinner less than two hours to breeze past him and book a spot in the Wimbledon final for the first time in his career.
I don’t know what I can do differently to be honest (laughing). Because the amount of hours I spend on a daily basis to take care of myself…I’d like to challenge everyone out there who’s on tour to see if anyone takes care of themselves more than me.
Novak Djokovic said at the press conference
Djokovic, however, is not reaping the fruits of his labors. Since 2024, he has lost a majority of his Grand Slam matches due to fitness issues or to the two youngsters.
But I was rewarded for many many years. So I might see it right now as misfortune. But I’ve gotten so much from God and from the life in my career that it would be a disservice for me to God and to my body and everything I had in my career to start complaining about injuries.
Novak Djokovic added
It was Nole’s fifth consecutive defeat to Sinner, who also secured his first victory over him in their third encounter at Wimbledon. Sinner has also become the second player after Carlos Alcaraz to beat the 38-year-old at Wimbledon since 2017. In the last two seasons, the Spaniard denied the Serb his eighth title at SW19.
Novak Djokovic now trails 4-6 in the head-to-head matchups with Jannik Sinner. He couldn’t play to his full potential because of that nasty fall in the quarterfinals against Flavio Cobolli.
Djokovic had also canceled his practice session ahead of the semifinal clash. At the press conference after his defeat, Djokovic revealed what the 23-year-old said to him at the net.
He apologized for me feeling bad today. There’s nothing to apologize for from his side. Obviously, he’s done very well for himself today, and for the last year and a half, he’s been the best player in the world.
Sinner will next be playing against none other but Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion. They will be facing each other for the second time in a Grand Slam final.
Before reaching his third consecutive Wimbledon final, Alcaraz survived a scare in the semifinal against Taylor Fritz. Alcaraz leads 8-4 in the head-to-head matchups against the three-time Grand Slam champion and also holds a 2-0 win-loss record this season following his wins at the Italian Open and the French Open finals.
The upcoming match is expected to be nothing short of a nail-biting encounter between the two rivals just like their meeting at the French Open. Alcaraz, apart from his head-to-head lead, has won their last five clashes.
If he wins, he will become the fifth man in the Open Era to take home three Wimbledon titles after Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Djokovic. He is also bidding to become the second man after Borg to complete the Channel Slam for consecutive seasons.
While Alcaraz is searching for his sixth title of the season, Sinner is chasing his second. Back in January, he breezed past Alexander Zverev to defend his Australian Open title.
