Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic is currently competing in the ATP Open, but there was some outside noise that has impacted the 36-year old. In a video posted by The Athletic on X (formerly known as Twitter), Djokovic is seen signing autographs for people when what looked like a metal water bottle from the stands hits the Serbian-born player in the head Friday.

There is no information regarding the status of Djokovic for the rest of the tournament in Rome, but the reason the water bottle hit his head has been revealed.

According to an Associated Press report, “A child was leaning over the railing to hand Djokovic a notebook for a signature and an aluminum-type water bottle fell out of the child’s backpack and hit the top-ranked player on the top of his head, local organizers said.” These unfortunate events came after the top ranked tennis player in the world beat Corentin Moutet, 6-3, 6-1.

Djokovic was writhing in pain as he went on his hands and knees to the ground as soon as the bottle made impact to his head. Security is seen in the video inspecting the bottle and looking towards the crowd to see if they can find who did it, but the star was helped to the back. The player also reportedly “suffered a bump on his head and was subsequently evaluated by doctors.”

Djokovic talks about his first contest at ATP Tour

The tennis star is a master at his craft as he is a 24-time Grand Slam Champion and especially when it comes to the ATP tourney, he has won six times in Rome. He spoke after the first round matchup against Moutet and talked about how he came out of it with a victory according to ATPTour.com.

“Match play is different to practise sets,” Djokovic said. “I played a lefty and I have not practised with a lefty in a while, so it took me a little time to adjust to the different rotations of the ball. The first four games were quite bad from me. A bad start. I lost both my services games.

“But then I played well,” Djokovic continued. “I only lost one game from 1-3 down. Corentin is a very talented player. He has great hands and is very unpredictable. You don’t know what comes up next, so I had to stay focused, which I did and it is a good opening match.”

Djokovic talks if he had any doubts heading into matchup

Djokovic is also a 98-time tour-level champion where per ATPTour.com, he “broke Moutet’s serve six times, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to improve to 18-0 in opening rounds in Rome.” He spoke candidly about the doubts he had heading into the Rome tournament since his last game was the semi-finals in Monte-Carlo last month.

“You always have doubts,” Djokovic said when asked if he had any ahead of his return to Tour. “Every single match. It is just the manner of how you deal with them and how long they stay there. How long they overwhelm your whole being and mind. It is an internal battle always more than an external battle. If you win that battle the external battle becomes a little bit more likely for you to win.”

Djokovic on possible finals matchup against Rafael Nadal

A player that is on the other side of the bracket that Djokovic said he would love to face against is a legend in himself in Rafael Nadal. The Serbian-born player said that the only way they would meet up would be in the finals which he called “spectacular” if the cards fell into the right hands according to EuroSport.com.

“I saw we are in opposite sides of the draw so if we do get to meet here it would be finals,” Djokovic said. “Which would be spectacular for both of us, but it’s still a very long way.”

“We haven’t been part of the same draw for quite a while, so that’s something we are not used to,” Djokovic continued. “For so many years we have been main rivals and always pushing each other to the limit and playing so many matches on different surfaces. Let’s see if we get a chance to have one last dance anywhere, it would be nice I think for us and the tennis world in general.”

Depending on what happens to Djokovic and if he is severely injured from the hit to the head from the water bottle, his next matchup will be against Alejandro Tabilo who is ranked No. 29. That Round of 32 matchup will take place Sunday, May 12 with the time to be determined as of this moment.
