Novak Djokovic confirmed on Sunday (October 13) that he plans to “compete and play next season,” despite losing to world number one Jannik Sinner in the Shanghai Masters final. The decline in form in 2024 has resulted in the former World No.1 losing hold of all three Grand Slams he had at the start of the year.
The 37-year-old Serbian was defeated by Sinner 7-6 (7/4), 6-3. This was Djokovic’s fourth loss in five matches against the 2024 Australian Open and US Open champion.
This has been one of my worst performing season in terms of results, it was going to come at some point and that’s ok, I’m happy with my gold medal. It’s not a live or die type of a goal for me. I achieved all of my biggest goals in my career. Right now, it’s all about the slams and seeing how far I can push the far for myself.

Djokovic admitted that 2024 has been “one of the worst-performing seasons” for him in terms of results. However, he made it clear that he has no intention of retiring, unlike his longtime rival Rafael Nadal.
While Djokovic did not add to his Grand Slam titles this year, he reached a major milestone by winning the Olympic gold medal against Carlos Alcaraz . This victory brought his career title count to 99, leaving him just one win away from joining Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer in the 100-title club.
24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has admitted that his priority for next season is to challenge the dominance of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The duo has created an aura of invincibility in 2024, splitting all four Grand Slam titles between them.
Djokovic experienced a similar situation in 2011 when he broke the dominance of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Now, at 37, he hopes to raise his game to match the level of Alcaraz and Sinner.
In addition to their Grand Slam success, Alcaraz and Sinner have won a combined four Masters 1000 titles this year. Despite Sinner comfortably holding the World No. 1 ranking, he has a 0-3 record against the Spaniard in 2024.
Djokovic has a 1-3 record against Alcaraz and Sinner this year. His only win came against Alcaraz in the Olympic Gold medal match, which remains the highlight of Djokovic’s 2024 season.
