Novak Djokovic will face Jannik Sinner in the semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships after beating Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday (July 9). However, the Serbian legend had a nasty fall in his quarter-finals and has now issued an update on his physical condition ahead of his clash against Sinner.
Djokovic was in complete dominance of his match against Cobolli as he led two sets to one. But during the fourth set, while leading 5-3 (40-30) and had his opponent serve, the former Wimbledon champion returned with a forehand shot, which Cobolli hit back, and then the Serb tried to switch direction in the middle of his baseline.
His right leg slipped and he fell to the ground right away. He lay on the grass for a while as the Center Court reacted with a quiet concern. Cobolli rushed down to him the 38-year-old back to his feet. Djokovic then walked gently before stretching his leg and then trying to shrug it off by jumping back to his baseline.
Cobolli went on to win the point, but Djokovic responded by serving brilliantly for the match, winning 6(6)-7, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 to reach his 14th Wimbledon semi-finals and his 52nd Grand Slam semi-finals. It was also his 26th tour-level win of the season, having played just 34 matches on the men’s circuit.
After the match, Djokovic was asked whether he felt anything after falling. He revealed on air on BBC Sports that it was a nasty fall, but the concerns will only become known to him in the next 24 or 48 hours:
There is a concern, but we’ll see in the next 24 to 48 hours. It was an awkward, nasty fall. It isn’t the first and probably isn’t the last fall that I’ll have on the grass – it’s kind of something I’m used to. But this year I don’t think I’ve fallen so far in the Championship, and this came at an awkward moment, on match point…Let’s see. I’m going to address this injury with my team and hope that the severity is not too bad.
Djokovic is seeking to win the Wimbledon Championships for the eighth time in his career. He will face Sinner in the semi-finals, a rematch of the French Open last-four clash, which ended in favor of the Italian star. Sinner leads their head-to-head record 5-4 and has won all their previous four meetings on tour.
Novak Djokovic will face Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the third time in less than two years. He faced the Italian at the Australian Open semi-finals and lost to him in four sets. He then faced him again at the French Open and also lost the match in straight sets. He will now face the 23-year-old on Friday (July 11) for a place in the final.
During the aforementioned interview, he revealed he could have played better in his last meeting against Sinner, but now has an opportunity to play his best tennis against him at the Wimbledon Championship:
I think I played a solid match. I could have played better, but [Jannik] was just a better player when the moments were important. I get another opportunity. For me, this is what actually counts the most, being in the last stages of Grand Slams and playing against the best player in the world right now. I couldn’t ask for a bigger challenge for myself. I look forward to it. I’ll do my best to get ready and perform my best there.
Djokovic has been to every final of Wimbledon since 2018. However, the Serb is definitely not at the peak of his physical powers as he was in his prime, making this an uphill task.
