In a disappointing turn of events for tennis fans worldwide, Chinese star Qinwen Zheng has announced her withdrawal from the 2026 Australian Open. The 23-year-old Olympic Gold Medalist, who is also a former Australian Open finalist, cited ongoing recovery from elbow surgery as the primary reason for her decision.

This marks a huge absence from the first Grand Slam of the year, but it’s not a surprise, given her lack of tournaments before the Australian Open. This withdrawal allows Polina Kudermetova to move into the main draw.

Zheng shared her statement on Instagram story, expressing her reluctance to withdraw.

“Hi everyone, after careful evaluation by my team and following medical advice, unfortunately, I will be withdrawing from the 2026 Australian Open. Making this decision has been incredibly difficult for me. Melbourne is my ‘lucky place,’ where I won my first Grand Slam main draw match and where I had my best experience. She further added that while her recovery is progressing well, she hasn’t yet reached the peak condition required for Grand Slam competition.

Zheng’s withdrawal stems from a persistent elbow issue that has plagued her since mid-2025. In July 2025, she underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow to address ongoing pain that had hampered her performance. She attempted a comeback in September at the China Open but was forced to retire in the third round against Linda Nosková due to recurring discomfort.

It seemed like she had rushed her comeback, which undermined her recovery. There aren’t many chances to play in your home country, and she probably just wanted to show up for her fans. This time, she and her team have made the decision to recover fully and prioritize long-term health over another potentially rushed return, ensuring she can compete at her best throughout the 2026 season and beyond.
