'Please don't let him go': Alex Corretja has some advice for Carlos Alcaraz after Wimbledon final defeat

Former Spanish player Alex Corretja has some advice for his fellow countryman Carlos Alcaraz after his defeat in the Wimbledon final. The 22-year-old lost to world number one Jannik Sinner in the final of the third Grand Slam of the year with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

It was Alcaraz’s first defeat in the competition since 2022. Following the result, former world number two Corretja spoke to Spanish media outlet MARCA, where he gave advice to Alcaraz to skip upcoming competitions in Canada.

Alcaraz is due to feature in the Montreal Masters, which will begin on July 26. Corretja was of the opinion that Alcaraz’s body deserves rest after an impressive season. Corretja also stated that losing the final of a Grand Slam to a player like Sinner is not a bad thing for Alcaraz, as he will be hungrier in the competitions going forward.

"Everything that's happening to Alcaraz is good: when he wins and when he doesn’t,” said Corretja. “That awakens his hunger and desire to progress and evolve. If you only win, you think you're doing everything right. If you get beaten, then you think you're not unbeatable. I think Carlos Alcaraz needs a rest right now, so that in the second half of the season, when he sometimes loses some steam, he doesn't really arrive so lame for the rest of the season. I never interfere in the schedule my great friend Juan Carlos Ferrero decides with Carlos Alcaraz, but I just hope he doesn't go to. I say this with all the affection and respect for the Canadian tournament. But I think Alcaraz would need to recover from all these efforts now. I think Carlos Alcaraz needs a bit of rest right now, so that in the second half of the season, when he sometimes loses some steam, he doesn't really end up feeling so weak for the rest of the season.
