Tennis fans around the world are keeping Grigor Dimitrov in their thoughts this Friday.
Earlier this week, Dimitrov was dealt the most heartbreaking blow of his career. Despite leading 6-3, 7-5 over world No. 1 Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon, he had to retire due to an injured pectoral muscle. He seemed well on his way to picking up the biggest win of his lifetime before getting hurt.
On Friday, the 34-year-old Bulgarian provided an update on his latest setback. He shared a photo from his hospital bed along with a heartfelt message about his future.
"Sometimes the heart wants to keep going… but the universe has a different plan for us," Dimitrov wrote on Instagram. "Having to withdraw from this match at Wimbledon was one of the most painful moments of my career. Thank you for the overwhelming wave of love — from family, friends, fans, colleagues, to the entire tennis community… your messages have genuinely lifted me through these hard times.
"Thank you all. Truly. Recovery starts now. I’ll see you all soon."
Dimitrov has received so much love and support from his peers over the past few days. That won't change anytime soon, especially after people read his statement on Friday.
"Wishing you a speedy recovery," Karen Khachanov said. "Stay strong and positive my friend! Big hug."
"Heal fast my friend," Lindsey Vonn wrote. "You'll be back."
"Wishing you a speedy recovery Grigor. You had the whole world glued to the screen with your performance," National Bank Open said.
"Thank you, Grigor for all the great emotions you bring us! Stay strong and have the faith the better days is coming soon and you will be always our belived Champion and a great persin we love so much," one person wrote.
"Thank you, Grigor, for the emotions, the elegance and the heart you always bring to the court. Wishing you a swift and strong recovery. The game already misses you," Lacoste commented.
Dimitrov has over a month to recover in time for the US Open in Queens, New York.
