It's the third day of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, and the quarterfinals continue with a duel between the United States and Kazakhstan. The Americans, led by former world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport, will feature Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro leading the team, given the absences of Coco Gauff (No. 3), Amanda Anisimova (No. 4), and Madison Keys (No. 6).
On the other side, the Kazakhs will be led by Elena Rybakina and Yulia Putintseva, two elite singles players who could pose a threat to any team. Italy and Ukraine have already secured their spots in the semifinals, and the winner of this match will be the third team to advance.
The high level of play and depth of American talent on the WTA Tour allow them the luxury of not needing their top three singles players. Emma Navarro (No. 18), who could easily be the No. 1 singles player for most countries, is only the No. 5 for the USA. In this tie, she will be tasked with securing the first point against Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva (No. 61).
Navarro, 24, has seen her ranking slip in recent months, arriving in a delicate state of confidence. Putintseva has not fared much better, dropping from the top 30 to her current ranking of No. 61. In fact, the Kazakh has only two wins in her last 10 appearances (since the start of the grass-court swing). This will be a match between two players who desperately need a confidence boost ahead of the final part of the year. Navarro is the favorite, having fallen in a tight third-round match at the US Open to Barbora Krejcikova, a two-time major champion and subsequent quarterfinalist.
This is undoubtedly the marquee match of the day and possibly the most significant quarterfinal of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina (No. 10) returns to defend Kazakhstan, following a perfect qualifying campaign in April. The former world No. 3 is the team's cornerstone and is in great form, with a 13-4 record in North American tournaments, including wins over Emma Raducanu, Madison Keys, and Aryna Sabalenka in the last month.
Her opponent will be No. 7 Jessica Pegula, who is fresh off a semifinal run at the US Open. The American has repeatedly shown that she is built for the big stage, and while Rybakina is one of the most respected names in these Finals, the 31-year-old will go into the match with confidence and even as a slight favorite. Pegula leads the head-to-head record 3-1, with their last encounter being at the 2023 WTA Finals (a win for Pegula). This will be a good test for both players and a key match, considering there is only one other top 10 player in Shenzhen (Jasmine Paolini of Italy).
If necessary, the doubles match will be played, with the Americans as the clear favorites. They have the doubles world No. 1 Taylor Townsend as their main star—a recent US Open finalist with two major titles to her name. If there are no last-minute changes, she will team up with the young McCartney Kessler (No. 49). There is also a chance that captain Davenport might opt to play Pegula, a former doubles No. 1 who has played very little in the category in the last year.
The Kazakh doubles team will be the regular pairing of Anna Danilina (No. 13) and Zhibek Kulambayeva (No. 109), who have teamed up many times for Kazakhstan. The winning team will advance to the semifinals, where they will await their opponent from the match between Japan and Great Britain.
