Preview Wimbledon 2025 ATP Semi-Finals: Carlos Alcaraz eyes another final as Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner renew rivalry
Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

The 2025 Wimbledon semifinals on the ATP side will feature a pair of luxury matchups, led by two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who emerges as the favorite in his clash against American No. 1 Taylor Fritz. On the other side, it will be a rematch of the Roland Garros semifinals, as Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic meet for the fifth time in a Grand Slam main draw.

Three of the four protagonists will be the same as the French Open semifinals just a month ago, this time with the inclusion of World No. 5 Fritz, who quietly managed to secure a spot among the final four at the All England Club.

Sinner vs. Djokovic

Jannik Sinner comes in with revitalized confidence after a magnificent performance against Ben Shelton, whom he defeated in straight sets (7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4). The American was simply overwhelmed by an almost perfect day from the Italian. Sinner had a scare in the Round of 16 against Grigor Dimitrov, where he was two sets down before the Bulgarian retired due to injury (3-6, 5-7, 2-2). Nonetheless, his strong performance against Shelton should be enough to dispel any doubts about his favoritism heading into this Wimbledon semifinal against an opponent he hasn't struggled with recently.

With nine previous encounters, Sinner leads the head-to-head 5-4, including victories in their last four consecutive matches. They previously met at Wimbledon in 2022 (quarters) and 2023 (semis), both resulting in wins for Djokovic. However, their most recent encounter was in the Roland Garros semifinals just a month ago, where the Italian comfortably defeated the 24-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets, reaching his first French Open final.

Djokovic, however, is one of the greatest in Wimbledon history, with seven titles in a total of 10 finals. In fact, the Serb has reached at least the final in the last six editions of the tournament, winning the trophy four consecutive times (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022) and falling in the 2023 and 2024 finals to Carlos Alcaraz.

"Nole" himself acknowledged at the start of the tournament that if he wants another major title, Wimbledon is probably his best opportunity. During his weeks at the All England Club, Djokovic's serve has been his main weapon, helping him overcome tough opponents like Alex De Minaur and Flavio Cobolli, both in four sets. Against Sinner, he won't have many break opportunities and will have to rely on his serve, patiently waiting for a window to open in his opponent's game.

Alcaraz vs. Fritz

The two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has met expectations at Wimbledon so far and continues to extend the best winning streak of his career. The last time "Carlitos" lost a match was in the Barcelona Open final almost three months ago. Since then, he has amassed 23 consecutive victories and titles at the Rome Open, Roland Garros, and Queen's Club Championships.

Alcaraz also boasts a 19-match winning streak at Wimbledon, after winning the title in 2023 and 2024. He has shone again this year, only facing slight scares against Fabio Fognini in the first round, when the veteran Italian managed to push him to five sets. Since then, Alcaraz has maintained excellent service games and has been relentless in critical moments. Along the way, he has achieved victories against opponents like Andrey Rublev and Cameron Norrie, and he is just one step away from his sixth Grand Slam final.

Facing him will be Fritz, who brings a strong run of nine consecutive wins after securing his fourth grass-court title at the Eastbourne Open, all in the English city. Fritz has reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time—after two previous quarterfinal losses—and will arrive with full confidence. The American has guaranteed his return to World No. 4, displacing Jack Draper. He overcame a very tough Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his debut—coming back from two sets down—and has defeated opponents like Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Karen Khachanov to earn his spot in the semis.

Although Alcaraz and Fritz have occupied the big stages for several seasons, they have only had two previous encounters, although one of those was in the Laver Cup 2024. Both were straight-sets victories for Alcaraz (who also defeated him in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open 2023). Without a doubt, the circumstances will be different this time, with a much more mature Alcaraz and as the clear favorite to win the Wimbledon title.
