Rafael Nadal Backs Carlos Alcaraz After Shock Miami Setback

After starting the year on an incredible 16-0 run, which included title victories in Melbourne and Doha, Carlos Alcaraz has come back down to earth following an underwhelming Sunshine Double. The world #1, widely viewed as a strong favourite to lift the title at Indian Wells, fell in the semifinals to an inspired Daniil Medvedev. Just a few days later, he suffered another setback in Miami, losing in the third round to Sebastian Korda.

Rafael Nadal Offers Perspective

Unsurprisingly, these defeats have once again sparked debate around how consistent Alcaraz truly is, despite his impressive record of a 34-match winning streak on outdoor hard courts before these losses.

One of Alcaraz’s strongest public defenders during this has been Rafael Nadal, who has consistently shown support for the Spaniard during challenging moments. Nadal, who understands the pressures of being a Spanish tennis leader, offered perspective on what Alcaraz may be experiencing after such a strong start to the season.

“We’re not going to worry about two defeats, they’re pointless. He’s bringing success to Spanish sport that would have been hard to imagine 30 years ago. I never lose sight of what everything he does means. When you come off a win at the Australian Open, you’re number one in the world, so what happens? Are you going to win every match this year? Of course not. We all have to congratulate and thank Carlos for what he’s doing.”

This is not the first time Nadal has backed Alcaraz publicly, having previously stated that he would be supporting him ahead of the Australian Open final this year.

Nadal Speaks on Martin Landaluce Breakthrough

Nadal also shared praise for another emerging Spanish player, Martin Landaluce, who recently became the first player born in 2006 to reach a Masters 1000 quarterfinal.

“He’s taken a step forward. I think he has some spectacular shots and he needs to keep improving a few small things that will make all the difference.”

Landaluce will be back in action in the Miami quarterfinals on Wednesday, where he faces Jiri Lehecka. He has already overcome multiple top-32 seeds on his impressive run to this stage.

While Alcaraz reflects on his Sunshine Swing results, he now returns home to regroup ahead of the clay-court season—a surface where he has consistently been one of the strongest players on tour. He will also be defending a significant number of ranking points during this upcoming stretch, making the next few months crucial for maintaining his position at the top of the game.
