While over a year into retirement, 22-time major champion Rafael Nadal has never truly left the tennis news cycle, much like other all-time greats who have bid adieu to the sport. His latest involvement has now been revealed, as the former world #1 is set to be present in Jeddah later this month for the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Nadal Returns for the Next Gen ATP Finals

This will be his second appearance at the event, following last year’s trip, which came on the back of the Spaniard’s multi-year sports ambassador deal with Saudi Tennis, signed in early 2024. And while the announcement of this partnership generated backlash amid sportswashing concerns, Nadal has maintained that the move, reportedly worth north of half a billion dollars, is about growing the sport in regions where it currently lacks presence.

“As I have been saying, it’s my goal to help inspire the next generation, in Saudi Arabia and around the world. Working together with the STF [Saudi Tennis Federation] to develop the huge potential of tennis in the Kingdom that has already made impressive progress is one key element. The reason for me to come back is to see the development at all levels and to help towards that goal. I’m very proud to help more kids pick up a racquet, compete, or simply discover something new that they love.”

Just like last year, Nadal is once again expected to be heavily involved in activities surrounding the tournament, with a meet-and-greet planned for December 19, along with other promotional events aimed at supporting the tournament and elevating the global profile of tennis.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Influence in Tennis

While the topic remains sensitive among many fans, it is fair to acknowledge that, like Nadal, tennis authorities and governing bodies have not shied away from engaging with Saudi Arabia. Along with hosting the Next Gen ATP Finals, the WTA Finals have also taken place in the Kingdom since last year, as tennis looks to tap into an increasingly lucrative region.

In addition, it was announced in October that the ATP has finalized a deal to introduce a Masters 1000 tournament in Saudi Arabia starting in 2028—one that will likely feature a record prize pool for an ATP Masters event. This follows the growing popularity of the Six Kings Slam exhibition, held in Saudi Arabia for the past two years, which features six of the world’s top players competing for an extraordinary $6 million winner’s prize.

Now, as the tennis year winds down, Saudi Arabia will once again host another iconic figure in Nadal, who is expected to remain a central part of not only this year’s Next Gen ATP Finals but also the broader tennis initiatives planned in the Kingdom over the coming decade.
