Renowned journalist puts Novak Djokovic on a pedestal by dubbing him as the ‘last GOAT standing’
Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Tennis has only one debate which has been the cause of many controversies, as the answer remains to be found. It is the GOAT debate revolving around the “Big Three”, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic . The renowned sports magazine Sports Illustrated released a bold statement of lionizing Novak Djokovic for his great work in tennis, making him a transformational player.

Through a story, Jon Wertheim, the author of the article shrewdly brought out Djokovic’s status in his home country. In the capital of Serbia Belgrade, there is a t-shirt vendor who sells only two t-shirts. One is of Serbia’s pride, Novak Djokovic, and the other of Nikola, not the basketball star, but Tesla, the scientist.

Both originated from Serbia, one pioneered the generation, transmission, and use of alternating current, while the other has become the face of Serbian sport through his achievements in tennis.

The main point is that, unlike Nikola Tesla, Djokovic isn’t a generational figure but a transformational one who is constantly trying to improve in tennis. From a child traveling amidst the wars, the 36-year-old has grown to become one of the most inspirational men in the sport. Rightly so, his achievements speak for himself as he stands alone at the top of the summit.

Djokovic’s level of esteem is not much different in the tennis sector. Except that here, he stands alone. He isn’t just a generational figure; he’s a transformational one, who, not unlike Tesla—also, by the way, tall, lanky, and sometimes overshadowed by a rival—is a technician and a futurist, constantly pushing the parameters of possibility. Novak Djokovic stands tall as World No. 1 at 36 years of age

The highly renowned sports magazine Sports Illustrated recently acclaimed Novak Djokovic as the last GOAT standing.

Currently World No.1, the Serbian stands tall, as no other player can close out his achievements. It has been years since Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic were tied at 20 Grand Slam titles each. With Federer retired, and Nadal’s body not fit enough to play, it leaves Djokovic, who is fresh at the age of 36, standing tall with 24 Grand Slams.

Three years ago, they were, fittingly, tied with 20 majors apiece. Now? Federer retired at 20. Nadal has 22, but a few months from turning 38, his body has entered full rebellion mode, and he is unlikely to add to his collection. Jon Wertheim

Furthermore, Sports Illustrated listed all the achievements of Djokovic that have cleared the air revolving around the GOAT debate. No other player in the history of tennis has been able to manage their body so well at the age of 36. The other known players in this age category are Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka, who are in search of form and are not able to maintain the same level of tennis they once had.

Even though Djokovic faced a small hiccup at the Australian Open Semi-finals, he remains the World No.1. He is training harder than ever for the tournaments to come.
