The schedule for Day Three of Roland Garros French Open 2025 has been released, marking the final day of Round 1 and the last remaining stars making their debuts. 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic returns to the court after securing his 100th title, full of confidence to pursue another major. Britain's Jack Draper and the 2024 finalist Alexander Zverev will also be present.
On the women's side, Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva emerge as the day's big stars. They are joined by the debut of Jessica Pegula, in addition to two former finalists: Karolina Muchova (2023) and Sofia Kenin (2020).
Philippe Chatrier: Home Favorites and Djokovic's Quest
The day will kick off with local favorite Varvara Gracheva facing 2020 French Open finalist Sofia Kenin, who arrives as the 31st seed. Once again, a local player will be the protagonist in the main stadium, with the American being a strong favorite, despite only having two wins in her last five matches.
Later, world No. 2 Coco Gauff will make her debut against Australia's Olivia Gadecki. The American is the second seed in the draw and arrives with high expectations after reaching finals at the Madrid Open and Rome Open. She also reached the Roland Garros final back in 2022, so the 21-year-old star knows she only needs to take one more step forward to contend for the trophy.
The third match of the day session will feature Novak Djokovic, a three-time French Open champion who seems to have put irregular results behind him after a notable campaign at the Geneva Open, securing his 100th title after defeating Hubert Hurkacz in the final. The Serb has reached at least the quarterfinals uninterruptedly since 2010 and has never fallen in an opening match since his first appearance in 2005. He will face American Mackenzie McDonald.
The night session will be closed by none other than Gaël Monfils, the local showman, who faces clay-court specialist Hugo Dellien. This is undoubtedly a fitting tribute for Monfils, one of the great entertainers on Tour for the past two decades, who will have the chance to play in the main stadium once again, and to close the day's proceedings. It won't be easy against an opponent who typically plays on clay courts almost all year round and is known for his ability to handle long, physically draining matches.
Court Suzanne-Lenglen
The second most important stadium will open with women's 6th seed Mirra Andreeva facing Spain's Cristina Bucsa. Andreeva's expectations are surely high, following a couple of WTA 1000 titles in the first part of the year and reaching quarterfinals in Madrid and Rome – only being defeated by Gauff on both occasions. The Russian was a Roland Garros semifinalist a year ago and her level on clay does not drop at all. The slow conditions are comfortable for Andreeva, and she will be a strong favorite against Bucsa, a Spanish clay-court specialist.
Next will be the turn of the 2024 French Open finalist Alexander Zverev, who seeks redemption in Paris after several complicated months. He traveled to the Hamburg Open at the last minute looking to gain rhythm, but again suffered an early exit as the first seed, falling in the Round of 16 to Alexandre Muller. Perhaps a five-set match could be beneficial for the experienced Sascha, who will face 19-year-old American Learner Tien, who has had a great season but still has things to prove when it comes to Grand Slams. Nevertheless, the teenager already defeated Zverev this year back at the Acapulco Open.
Once Zverev's match is finished, world No. 3 Jessica Pegula will take the court. She hasn't had great results in recent weeks, but always arrives as a favorite at majors. The American is not defending points this week, and is currently No. 2 in the live rankings, awaiting what Coco Gauff or Jasmine Paolini might do in the tournament. She debuts against talented Romanian Anca Todoni, who has often shown talent to face the best, but has yet to convince with a consistent level on Tour.
The day's closing match will feature men's world No. 5 Jack Draper, one of the most convincing players on the clay-court swing, and who has a well-deserved spot as a title contender. Draper reached the final at the Madrid Open and quarterfinals at the Rome Open, consistently performing well against lower-ranked opponents. This time he faces Mattia Bellucci, in what will be a good test to start if he wants to advance several rounds in the tournament.
