When Novak Djokovic was playing against Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinal of the recently concluded US Open, John McEnroe, in the ESPN commentary box, made a “hurtful” comment about a senior US Open staff member. The staffer, Susan Perkins, criticized McEnroe for making her feel embarrassed.
This incident happened when Perkins was seen giving restrung rackets to one of the players. When she appeared on the screen, McEnroe in the commentary box said, “Thank you, grandma“.
I would like to tell John McEnroe that his comments, such as “good time for her age group” and “grandma,” felt dismissive and hurtful rather than humorous. I was simply doing my job, delivering a restrung racket to a player. His job is to comment on the players, not other people working on the court.
Susan Perkins told Sportskeeda
Perkins said she has been working as a court attendant for the last 20 years at the US Open; that, because she enjoys tennis so much, she even gave up her two-week vacation to work during the tournament. She said she was reluctant to go to the court as she was afraid that McEnroe would say “more derogatory” things about her.
It is one thing to jest, it’s another to stereotype someone based on age. I’ve worked at the US Open for years and spent that time supporting the sport with pride and professionalism, yet those comments made me feel invisible and mocked.
Susan Perkins added
Perkins also thanked all the fans who supported her. She also revealed that ESPN approached her and told her they would talk to McEnroe, but she was still waiting to hear from them.
This season, Novak Djokovic featured in every semifinal of the Grand Slam events. At the Australian Open, he gave a walkover to Alexander Zverev because of an injury.
In the next three Majors, the Serb suffered straight-set defeats to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Twice he lost to the World No.2 (at the French Open and Wimbledon). At Flushing Meadows, after knocking out Taylor Fritz, the 24-time Grand Slam champion succumbed to defeat against eventual winner Alcaraz.
At the press conference then, Djokovic made it clear that he wants to continue his hunt for his 25th Major next year as well. Tennis Hall of Fame journalist Steve Flink, however, doesn’t think Djokovic needs another Major to prove anything to anyone because he has already surpassed the Grand Slam tally of his two longtime rivals: 20-time Major champion Roger Federer and 22-time Major champion Rafael Nadal. He told Ubitennis:
He doesn’t need it. You know, he has the most men’s. He beat Rafa by two; he beat Roger by four. That’s what the real barometer is for him: what he did against his two biggest rivals.
So far this season, Djokovic has clinched one title- his 100th ATP trophy at the Geneva Open by defeating Hubert Hurkacz, apart from which, he also reached the final of the Miami Open, only to lose to Jakub Mensik. Now that Grand Slam events are over, it’s uncertain what Djokovic’s next event will be, given that he has been skipping tournaments one after the other, including the Masters 1000 ones.
At the press conference after his US Open exit, Djokovic revealed he is planning to play the ATP 250 event in Athens – the first edition of the Hellenic Championship, which is scheduled to start on November 1-8. Last year, Djokovic, after his US Open exit, participated in the Shanghai Masters but couldn’t cross the final hurdle in the form of Sinner. The last Big Title Djokovic has lifted was the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal by beating Alcaraz.
