Serena Williams has been playing tennis for most of her life with only one goal in her mind: winning. However, the 23-time Grand Slam winner now claims she has a whole new set of reasons to continue to prove herself on the court. Her most recent appearance was at the 2026 US Open, where she headed out at the quarterfinals in mixed doubles with Carlos Alcaraz.
In an interview with comedian Kevin Hart, Williams was asked if she had more to offer the sport or if she had come to a point where she was just moving on.
“I do, I do have more, but only because it’s fun,” Williams said.
For a player whose career is defined by relentless competitiveness, the explanation marked a striking change in perspective. Williams has never needed another reason to chase excellence, but motherhood has given her a motivation that is far more personal.
Williams said she is not just playing for titles, records or to beat an opponent anymore. Her daughters have altered her perception of the sport.
Williams explained, “I’ve never played for fun. mean, I’ve played for fun, but this is different.”
The most emotional response she gave was when Williams explained exactly why this phase of her tennis career is important.
The tennis legend said, “Like I’m playing literally so my girls can see me and they can like see what I can do.”
It’s a sentiment that gives a different meaning to Williams’ desire to remain connected to tennis. Her daughters are not simply watching one of the greatest players in history. They are watching their mother challenge herself, compete, and continue to pursue something she loves.
Hart appears to recognize the deeper meaning behind Williams’s explanation. He said, “Things like this I think are necessary.”
This could be the most significant chapter in Williams’ tennis career. Tennis can now be more than a game after decades of playing under huge expectations.
The outcome is a very personal one; that’s not so much about what Serena Williams accomplishes, but what her children might take away from her doing it.
